But you definitely need to change the plugs on the recommended intervals or they break off pieces into the cylinder.
They break into pieces in the combustion chamber?
Seriously WTF.

I did and the 5.4L was an absolutely terrible engine.

Ya, my 4.6l 2v mustang gave up at like 118k. Was going down the interstate and it just let go. Was pouring smoke out the back.
Good times.
ETA: had a 4.6l 3V mustang as well. One of the spark plugs broke. That cost $400 for them to dig it out.
Its such a shitty design they actually made a tool to extract the broken spark plugs.

I had one. Save yourself the trouble. It’s a horrible engine.

I had a 2014 Expedition King Ranch
at 128,000 miles it threw a rod on belt way 8 and had to replace the motor
put on a used motor and had the cam phaser knock, sounded like a diesel
catalytic converter went out and has to replace them
loved the truck, but what a PITA, Sold it at 185,000 miles and bought a Volvo XC90

I had one, '01 Expy. No real issues. Did have a gasket leak coolant into cyl #1 and would cause a misfire. Cost about $1200 to get that fixed but it included spark plugs change which is a bitch on those motors. Idle Air Control valve would cause problems sometimes. I didn't think it was a bad motor per se. The spark plug issues probably didn't need to happen. Head needed more threads.

My 1999 f150 5.4l v8 had 189,000 when I traded it in. Currently have a 2010 f150 5.4l v8 with 230,000 and also have 2020 f150 5.0 v8. Haven’t had a problem with such things.

You can get a lot of miles on them but they are bad about blowing coil packs. Every one of them I've ever drove around the auction parking lot was idling rough. I've got a buddy tho that specifically looks for them cheap and likes fixing them up when he's hard up for money b/c to him it's easy but most people are in over their head. I've seen him buy expeditions and f150's for $1000, change coil packs and do a few other cheap things and sell for 5000.
The Ford 4.6L was one of the best engines made.

Had an 04 that gave me 125k maintenance free miles. Had a tick to it though.

Car Wizard is even worse over the Cadillac NorthStar V8's.
What he gets wrong about the 3V Triton, about the oil drain back passages or the cam phasers, is that he doesn't know what the root cause of the issue is and it's the oil pump and 5W-20. The oil pump is the same version from the 2V engines, perfectly fine for them (even with 5W-20) but not good for the oil-driven cam phaser system of the 3V engines. Melling has a high volume/pressure oil pump that eliminates pretty much all of the issues. Installing the oil pump, running 5W-30 or 10W-30, and putting in the one-piece sparkplugs and it's a very solid engine. Dirt cheap now too.
