1) don't expect too much from work, it is a job, a means to ends
2) appreciate that you have a job which employs
3) could always go to school and work, very easy in today's market
4) find something you really, really enjoy and get people to pay you to do it
5) repeat 1 and 2 often

Go to PTEC school so you can be an operator, and pull six figs.
Just finished midterms yesterday. PTEC school is awesome because it laid back and you meet a lot of cool arse people (and make strong connections)
They remind us on a weekly basis that we'll be busting our asses but living comfortably (financially).
3 semesters to go
eta: If you already have a degree, my school offers a fast track program to where you can finish the PTEC courses within a year or something like that and the school gives you all kinds of internship and OSHA certification opportunities.

For some people, yes. Not all.

I work shift work at a local plant. Been there a year and a half and find it extremely unfulfilling.
Then you're not being challenged enough. There are jobs at your plant that would provide stimulation, and probably a higher paycheck. Find what it takes to move, and give that a shot. Also, $60K a year with overtime is laughable at the plant I work at, with 2 year employee's (with OT) reaching 6 figures. I've been shifting for 39 years. Moving from AO to Controller will definitely offer a challenge, and a hell of a lot more money too.

That said, I just hate work in general. If I'm going to be miserable I might as well make a good wage while I am.

I left a machine shop job after I graduated and went into the mortgage industry. It was a struggle at first and big culture change but I would never go back now.

Ever though about branching out and starting up that competition? You probably already know the trade, and there isnt other competition in the field, why not capitalize on it?
Well, I just started so I don't know the industry that well yet. Secondly, it's incredibly boring and nothing I want to sink my money and time into. Thirdly, I got hooked up with a nice, cush salary so i'm in no hurry to leave.

Nah, I'm a nested contractor elsewhere. I don't wanna air everything specific about me on here though. Not sure how going back to school for another degree would be an option considering I'm on shift though. I can't tell my boss I'd like to work certain days because I'm going to school. Doesn't work like that
Interesting thoughts and advice here though. Appreciate it. I'll figure something out.

What kind of plant do you work at for 60k? The chicken plant?
Posted on 10/14/16 at 5:23 pm to SmoothOperator96
I finished PTEC at Nunez in July and got hired as an operator a week after. Don't believe them when they try and say everyone gets jobs. I'd say a quarter of the people I went to ptec with, over a two year period actually got jobs as an operator in a plant.
- Keep your GPA above 3.0
- Pay attention and participate in the methanol unit.
- Make sure you are working a job while in school (something industrial is best)
- Do a mock interview with Mike a couple weeks prior to any interview you have scheduled (he's a great instructor).
- Apply to anything and everything in industry including contractor jobs when your get into your 2nd to last semester.
Something I've noticed is that the only people who get hired are the ones that are actually interested in preparing themselves for an operator job and not just there to get the degree.

Yeah, and too often you guys come out of PTEC with an insane idea that you'll step into a board job and you know it all.
My suggestion is that you walk in to any job and soak up everything and don't complain. You will have a LOT to learn, as PTEC is operator kindergarten.

If it makes you feel better, I'm always thinking about my next career move.
Few people under 40 will keep the same job for more than 5-6 years. Actually 2-3 is starting to be more common.
