We used to go hide from the teachers and beat the shite out of each other every single day at every recess.

Kids would be coming in from lunch with the neck of their shirt all stretched out. Bloody noses, hair all fricked up. The teachers would catch us and we'd get grounded from the playground for a few days and then we'd be right back to it.

A couple that I remember a couple that I don’t.

Results were mixed. Not proud of any of it.

I fricked around and found out with a guy that had over 100 amateur boxing fights under his belt. Very thankful to be sober these days.

Two as an adult.

One was a draw that if it hadn’t got stopped when it did, I probably would’ve lost.

The other I kicked arse.

One loss as a kid in 7th grade.

One day on youtube I was watching videos of kangaroos fighting. Those bastards really square up to people.

A few. Being a cop for 26 years lends itself to that sort of thing. I'm a former wrestler, so I usually choose to conduct that business on the ground where I have the advantage rather than stand up and trade punches.

That dude that punched that Kangaroo is one of the dumbest humans to ever walk the earth when you consider what the kangaroo could have done to him.

Four. One when I was like 8 or 9. One in high school. Two in college. Been about 20 years and I’m pretty sure my fighting days are over, thankfully. Too much to lose these days.

My older brother wrestled JUCO and D2. I don't even like giving that mother fricker a hug.

I don't know....10-15ish. In the past twenty years? Two.

One involved a drunk guy, he was a little feller (not a midget, just short) who threatened to shoot us. It wasn't much of a fight. He tried to hit me, I caught his hand and kicked his feet out from under him. He landed on the top of his head. He got up, swung again, I caught it again, and hit him. He went out.

The second involved a guy who was beating on his wife (a friend of mine since childhood). I waited for him, leaning against the wall outside their house one morning. He walked passed me, I cleared my throat, he turned, and I blindsided him with a right. I proceeded to kick him in the nuts, then a knee to the face. When he was down I stomped and kicked him for what seemed like an hour, but was probably 20-30 seconds. The neighbor's dog was barking something terrible and the neighbor stepped out on their porch. I picked my hat up (a Hawaii University hat of all things), put it back on, shot the neighbor a look and a nod, got back in the truck and calmly left.

I honestly expected charges over that, but she never went back to the house and he never said a word to police. The neighbor told her dad and brother when they were moving her stuff that he had a pretty good idea what that was over, and he was a forgetful person by nature.

A bunch .... some brawls. Years of being stationed in Fayettenam back in the day before Haye Street was cleaned-up ... the old Siam Club and Rick's lounge .... those were violent days. But I fought waaaaay too much in HS and college too.

My Dad apologized to me for making me that way, before he died.

I've got the scars and broken bones to deal with now, knives and poolsticks, etc. .... no fun at my age. So many broken bones in my hands and feet, broken jaw, fractured orbital socket. Bottle to the face that penetrated my cheek and took out three teeth that I've since had to habe implants .... I dunno what I was thinking back then, I was not a nice person.

Even in the 90s I fought in these tough man contests at titty bars and road houses ... it was a thing back then. I had childhood issues and I drank too much and was a mean drunk.

Anyways, it is what it is ... and was. It was different times.

My Son has never been in a fight and hopefully never will.

Ain't nothing wrong with avoiding it if you can.

One night I saw one of the absolute hardest dangerous people I know pick a fight with his old lady's clean cut ex boyfriend. The guy was rough, rode bulls, did a fair amount of coke, and fought more often than not for the fun of it. If there were three of me, I still would have kept my distance.

The guy he tried to hit made him miss and knocked him clean out with the first punch. The problem was the second punch was an uppercut that kept the guy up long enough to pin him to the wall. He landed four or five more shots to the head and a few body shots before the guy hit the ground.

Cowboy spent time in the ICU for his troubles. No one ever brought it up, but he stopped picking fights and stopped the drug use.

It remains the finest example of misjudging a book by its cover I've ever seen.
