As late as the eighties a lot of New Orleanians still went there. My SO's parents were both graduates and her mom was a librarian there.

A kid I grew up with had one of those infamous legislative scholarships to Tulane. After 3 years the guy who gave him the scholly lost the election and the new guy gave it to somebody else. He had to finish up at ULM.

You would think we would get some nice delis or real falafel out of it.
Though both the city's Israeli restaurants are good.

I mean, the resident jew food person makes a good pastrami and swiss sandwich.

Started in the 1940's-50's due to discrimination elsewhere.
Percentage is probably lower today than 20 years ago. Tulane competing for the SMU / TCU crowd these days.

That sounds like marketing bs. There were plenty of private universities that accepted Jews, though they did try to recruit out of state students to decrease the Jewish percentage.

I have always heard Tulane was founded by Yankees for southern Jews.

It was founded as a public university first and then Paul Tulane donated a bunch of money and set up the Tulane Educational Fund. In 1884 the state ceded control of the university to the trust which turned it into a private school.

Port Gibson has a Messianic Synagogue. Basically Jews who believe in Jesus

I've always been curious about that building in Port Gibson. I pass through there every now and then when traveling to Vicksburg.

It caught my eye a few months ago when I was passing through. Apparently it was an old shul. Has been transferred over. Not sure if it is still active, looked kind of run down

It was the ORIGINAL University of Louisiana. If I were Tulane, I'd smack down USL and NLU.

Like you'd have the grades or the money to get into Tulane.

I moved to Baton Rouge about 6 years ago and since then I can count on one hand the number of Jewish people I've met.
Baton Rouge has at least 2 active synagogues.

Also, FWIW, east coast Italians did their part in the pastrami and corned beef deli trade.

I was talking to a professor about this and it made me think to ask if anyone who's known the area for a long time would know. I've always found it interesting that Tulane while being non affiliated with any particular religion has seemed to have attracted a very large amount of Jewish students in one of the more Catholic dominated parts of the country for at least a few decades. What makes me ask is my professor himself is Jewish (and also probably in his 70s to help you figure out a timeline) told me that when his father applied to Medical School there he was denied because at that point they had quotas for Jewish students, indicated that they even used to discriminate against them.

It's had a sizable Jewish contingent since forever. My Jewish grandmother attended Newcomb (the all womens college that merged with Tulane) in the 40's. I have several other great aunts and uncles on that side of the family that did as well. New Orleans has had a sizable Jewish population since the early 1800's. Judah P. Benjamin, a member of Confederate President Jefferson Davis's cabinet, hailed from New Orleans. In fact, every small town around Louisiana and Mississippi had at least one Jewish family that ran a department store back then. The ACE Hardware in Donaldsonville was originally built as a synagogue, and is the oldest synagogue still standing in North America. It wasn't until around the turn of the century that most of those little Jewish families left the small towns and moved to New Orleans so their daughters could find suitable Jewish men to marry.

Baton Rouge however probably has 6 Jews in the entire city and they are waiting for Israel to fly them out of that oppressive shithole.

A little more than that but close enough. They still had to build two temples.
