It takes me longer to figure out what to do with the used oil than it does to actually change the oil.

I want to install a drain plug with a magnetic tip. You pump it out from the top? My car doesn't have a dipstick, so ensuring all of the oil is getting be before I put 7 quarts in is a big deal. I can't tell how much I have in there until I fire up the car.

catch pan

Get one that holds 2-2.5 gallons and can function as something that you can use to return the oil.

Find a plastic tub that is big enough for that pan to fit in and you can use the tub for transport and storing the pan when not in use.

Thanks. I'll be transporting the oil in the trunk of it, 5 series, and there're all sorts of sensitive bits back there.

Checking the oil level takes as long as swapping oil and filter

Seriously this. OP, get the rectangle one. I share one with my brother, but we both have diesels so lots of oil coming out, having one that stands up with a pour spout is a lot easier to deal with. I buy the 2.5 gallon containers of oil and just dump the burned stuff back into the container when I'm done.
and if you don't already know where the jack points are on your vehicle then you might want to rethink that ramp option before you drop your car on top of yourself.

I have the same car, E60, with the V8 and a 6 speed manual. One of the last decent BMW's made IMO.

There is a jack point in the center of the front subframe. You may have to drive the car up on 2x6's to get a jack far enough underneath to reach the point. I have the Sport package, so my car is lowered. Once up in the air, you can put jack stands on each side at the jack points.

There is a drain port in the main panel, so no panels have to be removed.

That's about it. If you have any questions, let me know.

Fumoto drain valve is a huge help. Saves time and avoids having all the oil flow onto your hand and arm when removing the drain plug. Pour the used oil back into the jugs you just emptied. Wall Mart takes old oil without raising an eyebrow. And yes, I can afford to pay for oil changes, just had too many experiences with high school dropouts screwing up things that I know I can do the right way. It takes about 30 minutes. I manage to fit it into my schedule with ease.

on the driveway will be tougher. It takes me longer to put on my two post lift than it does to change it.

Truth is, while there is a manly trait to changing your own oil, it doesn't save you money anymore and can actually hinder you in a warranty dispute with a newer car. My dad changes his own oil and blew up his Ecoboost motor in a 13 F150. He had no evidence showing he changed the oil so he had to pony up 13k for a new motor and 2 new turbos.

To answer your OP question though, if it takes you 30 minutes you are doing it slowly or wrong. Put a low profile catch under your oil pan, unscrew the drain plug and let it drain. When it is empty, put the plug in, take the catch out from under and take the oil filter off. put new on and fill with oil.

I haven't changed my oil myself in over a decade. There's so many quick change shops that the prices are similar to doing it on my own.

I am not against doing it on my own, but when it's 105 degrees outside I'll pay somebody.

Will take you an hour or so. Next time it will take half an hour or less. Depending on the vehicle and access.

ETA: 5 series is pretty easy. Make sure you have a tool to use to get the filter unscrewed.

This is the most difficult part on a 5 series. Have a plan.

15 minutes or so if I hurry.

I prefer to pull the plug and let it drain while I rotate tires, clean air filter, refill washer fluid, scrub windshield, and silicone treat the wiper blades.

Maybe an hour and a half total.

Absolutely not.

It's a simple as recording it in the back of the owner's manual, or on carfax.com. save the upcs from the big of oil and the filter box, or just the receipt itself.

It is 100% illegal to have a warranty that doesn't allow self maintenance.

I can barely fit under a car with those rhino ramps, and I'm not fat. Jack points are usually at, or right behind the pinch weld behind the front fenders

The secondary air filter on the bike is supposed to be changed every 3000 miles. It will never be changed again.

I have to remove rear brake lights, second battery, cargo box, seat, cab panel, oil tank, all lines, primary filter and box... Just to get to it
