How long before traffic lights use AI?

How many years do you give it?

As I’m getting older, I find myself getting grumpy at a stoplight when I’m the only one in the entire intersection, but I have to wait five minutes for all the bullshite lights to cycle through based on how long they have set timers up for.

How soon do you think we will see AI dictating how long the light stays green if you are the only car at an intersection and there are no other cars coming from opposite ways?

I’m aware of some intersections having a sensor just below the pavementthat determines whether or not the turn arrow comes on, but this is about as “smart” as I think stoplights are these days

Some do this already if they have the sensors. Some don’t.

As I am getting older, I find myself just running them. The amount of fricks I seem to be not be giving lately is surprising even to me.

And the cops now don’t give a shite if you do.

It would be a good use for AI. I had my first experience with AI taking my order in the drive thru the other day. I hate to say it, but it did a better job than the average LA fast food worker that's not at Chick-fil-A or Canes.

I regularly have to stop at a light where there is usually zero cross traffic while I wait. About once a week someone just blows through it. I don’t do it, but I don’t blame them.

Not soon enough.

How much American productivity is lost because of timed red lights?

Some, not all or none.

i agree but our infrastructure here in the US is so outdated

in china all intersections have a huge arse timer countdown clock that syncs up through their version of google maps. pretty legit

It’s probably one of the better use cases out there for machine learning.

I think the utility is fairly limited for an individual intersection, but it makes a ton of sense when you have a lot of intersections networked back to a central hub (as we supposedly have in BR nowadays…).

In that case there ought to be a way to feed traffic cam, sensor, and maybe even Google Maps/Waze data into an AI to let it not only optimize light timings, but also react in real time to changing traffic conditions.

The main holdup is not the adoption of AI, it’s the sensors and cameras. It seems easy enough, but we had the technology to do this decades ago and yet we haven’t. AI with simple cameras will make it easier, though.

Already exists in primitive form. A recent video, but this tech has been around for a while.

If you are the only one around, and there's no cameras...what's to stop you from going?

Why do I recall some law that said traffic lights in rural areas can function as 4 way stops if no one else is around?

ETA: now I remember I had a friend tell me that growing up...but he was a frequent liar.

So it's probably not true

From what I understand, the problem is when these things break. The technology isn't going to be worth a crap if it isn't maintained.

To be clear, I'm talking about pulling up and stopping, noticing no one is coming and there are no cops, and then pulling thru and getting on with my day.

If AI is ever employed in Louisiana for anything traffic related, I fully expect it to be at a level of mental retardation.
