Depression will skyrocket. We have too much free time as it is

Yep. No more wars to fight and lions to kill has done wonders to the psyche of the modern male.

Absolute falsehood
Only those who tie their existence to career and materialism.
Life has a shite load of meaning.

I certainly don't.

shite like that is why my philosophy has always been “A job is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself.”
Money is nice but having the time to enjoy it is better.
If I had gone to law school or med school, I could have made bank but I sure wouldn’t have been able to enjoy it.
Not seen many 65-75 retirees hike the Appalachian Trail, primitive camping to take advantage of the hunting/fishing along the way, after earning the opportunity through climbing the corporate ladder.
Tons of angry old men and women throwing their golf clubs and wrecking golf carts in frustration while sucking at the game since their youth is in the rearview mirror though.
Now, should it be the bingo game or shuffleboard or bridge at the old folks home? Yeah, retirements great ain't it! All that money in the bank, all the accolades and awards for the career...and nobody remembers it due to Alzheimers and the aged body prevents really enjoying spending on wild adventures.

There’s something appealing about putting in an 8 or 9 (or even 10) hour day of working with your hands and going home exhausted but being able to physically see the work you did. If I could go back I would have learned a trade straight out of high school and done that instead of wandering semi aimlessly through undergrad and my mid 20s.
Edit: I feel like those of us near my age (33) also really got the short stick with the 2007 collapse. I think I was like 26 by the time it actually started turning around in 2012. I live a good life now but those were some rough years to start my so called “professional” life . I feel like I basically “lost” five years of financial and professional progress.

There’s an old lady easily in her late 60s early 70s on the amite that has one of those 200k Supra ski boats and she’s out every weekend wake surfing. She’s living the life

Catch 22
Most demanding careers provide a lucrative return but at the expense of free time. However, one can buy free time in many instances.
Jobs that allow for tons of free time typically do not provide high earnings. So in return you have the time but limited monetarily to spend said time.
It's all about balance...

And people wonder why millennials thought we had to all get a college degree to find work all while government backed student loans increased tuition exponentially.

Basically, unlike the idle rich of yesteryear, the meritocratic rich of today outwork everybody, to their own detriment and (especially) to the detriment of their families.
This has always been life. Always. Just think back to hunter gatherers. Competition is life. Lazy people always lose

Sounds like my in-laws. Spend their whole adult life and first decade of retirement pretending to be broke because Dave Ramsey said so. Now they are beginning to have health issues and it’s harder to travel or enjoy life.

Most people who are winning at meritocracy seem pretty damn happy to me. Much happier than the people they're beating.
I suspect the professor is not one of the former.

2007-2012 was a pretty shitty time to be coming out of college.

Long hours and depression related
Your activities during leisure time are more telling.

Nothing makes me want to put my head through a wall more than being around a bunch of professional types who all want to try and one-up each other as to how much they work and how "busy" they are.
I remember my first month out of law/tax school, a partner in the firm I was working for bragged to me about not taking a week off of work his first 3 years except for his honeymoon. It didn't take me much longer to realize billing hours was not what I was going to do with the rest of my life
To be clear, I actually think most such folks are full of shite. It's just the mindset of feeling like one needs to constantly project such a thing that makes it just as, if not more depressing, than if there were being completely truthful.
