I’m voting no on it. If all the money was given to the three things they are suppose to go I would vote yes. Sid isn’t being transparent with any of the money situation so I hope it fails

I agree that perfect is the enemy of good. I’ll probably vote yes for 1 and 2. Those are good programs, but I’d rather just see the libraries funding renewed with a cut. I’m conflicted on renewing the CoA tax.

I thought that if we didn’t vote to give the COA a haircut then the tax would continue as is.
Am I wrong?

No, you're not wrong. Since the COA property tax was approved by voters as it now stands, voters have to approve a change (reduction) in the tax.

If Prop 3 fails to pass then the COA taxes will remain just as they are, including the surplus taxation rate, and no funds will be reallocated from it to the Sheriff, DA's office and infrastructure improvements and maintenance.

I personally would vote to cancel ALL COA property taxes but that would be a death knell for the plan because all we'd hear is "The mayor wants to push Grandma off a cliff in her wheelchair."

That is the reason BREC's taxes were not included for a small reduction in the plan because if they were all the Karen soccer moms in East Baton Rouge Parish would scream to high heaven that their little Braydons would never be able to play soccer again.

This thread has confirmed to me once again that many everyday people (not referring to you) don't bother to research what they are voting on. Instead they fabricate fantasies that fit their biases.

Here are the dirty secrets.

The debt that is being paid down is what is owed to St George. St George officials are supporting it because they get what’s owed with a little bit of a haircut because it will be settled now.

Do you sit around all day making up fantasies to satisfy your paranoia?

St. George will collect the money owed to them whether or not the Thrive Plan passes or fails.

What i have a problem with is the Library transferring $52.4M and Mosquito transferring $6M to the City-Parish General Fund.
Why is that a problem for you?

Both of those agencies have been sitting on millions of dollars in bank deposits for years and yet they continue to want us to vote for renewals and increases in their taxes.

It's been my pet peeve for decades how much surplus funds these agencies have accumulated.

They have come up with creative ways just to figure out how to spend it, including the Rat & Bug Patrol wanting to buy a million dollar helicopter and the Library Board tearing down perfectly good library buildings just so they can build a monument to themselves with their names listed on the brass plaque in the entrance atrium.

And BREC is even worse. The last time BREC produced an audited financial statement it showed they have almost $90 million in bank deposits just sitting there. But BREC is the Holy Grail which cannot be touched by any politician lest this happens to them...

Well we do agree on this. BREC needs to be severely cut back and taxes lowered.

I thought this was a renewal of the mills. So if all the proposals fail, current mills stay in place for how many more years?

And how do we roll back the extra retirement pay from the DROP theft? That is the albatross around the citizen’s necks.

Does a no vote mean the tax is not renewed at all or it just stays as it is?

100% agree. I cannot stand paying the ridiculous library tax in 2025. I’ve been very vocal about that over the years.

But why are we taking money from them to pay for essential services for Baton Rouge?
How is that beneficial to the parish?

What is happening here is shitty politics. It’s a good proposal to take some of their annual money and reallocate for storm drains and streets. I think that would pass with a big majority.
It’s shady as frick to put in their that you’re also taking money to make up for the lost st george revenue, and they aren’t even hiding that’s what they are doing. Thats bull shite, and it’s also not sustainable.

I agree the library has too much money but it is almost impossible to get the library administration, the library board, and the metro council to agree on how to spend it

when did this happen? I really hope you do not mean the River Center Branch library (downtown).

I’ve read through this thread, and everything he said is absolutely SPOT ON.

I’ll be voting YES on all three propositions to support the Mayor I helped elect — to give him the tools needed to fix the city/parish budgets that were left broken after years of neglect and poor leadership from the previous administration.

I honestly believe much of the opposition comes from those who’d rather see this administration fail so they can replace it in four years with a Democrat.

Three different taxes here.

The property tax to fund the library system is expiring. A no vote ends the tax and cuts the library funding out; however, there is still time for another vote.

If the other two propositions fail, the current taxes will stay in place. They aren’t set to expire soon.

If you vote no on this, the next option is to raise taxes on the city of Baton Rouge residents b/c they have been relying on the residents of St. George’s taxes for decades now without actually giving back to them their fair share. Now they have to go take $58M from the library and mosquito abatement just to pay for essential services just in Baton Rouge.

Fify

If you don’t live in the city of Baton Rouge, vote no on this.
It’s not our problem you can’t manage the property taxes you receive from your residents to provide essential services to them.

I didn’t vote for Sid the mayor of BR. I voted for Sid the parish president.

Split the vote up and see how it goes.
One vote for $16M annually to be taken from library for drainage and street projects. YES
Another vote for stealing $52M from the library for the city-parish general fund. NO
Lumping them together is sleazy.

The Library is not the owner of those funds… fortunate manager at best. That money belongs to the taxpayers having been received thru means of collection and time. The Parish President, dare I say it, is trying to be responsible and amicable by using what’s already been collected. People saying they don’t use the services from the incorporated part of the city are full of crap. Go eat there? Drive thru it? LSU game? Take a crap there? Been involved in a fender bender there? Wife go shopping there?
