My B-I-L was a Marine back in the 2000s.. During boot camp, said the biggest, baddest black dude in his platoon had eveyone scared of him until he took his swim test.. Said the dude got in the water and cried like a baby...

A number of Navy SEALS from the Midwest U.S. did not learn to swim until they decide to become a SEAL. Not knowing how to swim as a adult is anything but un-common.

You’re going to have to prove this, because it smells like bullshite.

And what’s “a number” ?

1?

simple, if you move your arms and legs upward faster then downward, like a panicked person would do trying to reach for safety, then you do down and not upward in the water.

if you cant relax and you stay tense then you in fact sink and do not float, you have to relax to float and not too many drowning people can stop and relax while drowning.

We would swim out into a lake and see who could go down and bring up a handful of mud. We would keep moving out until only one person did it. That person won.

As a southerner this phenomenon is so strange to me.

A lot of us in Central Texas practically grew up on the Lake ... I can’t think of a single person I know who can’t swim.

I'll brag and say both my kids learned before they were 3. My 7yo can thread water for at least 45 minutes with people making waves and splashing him. He and my 6 yo have floated on their backs for an hour in the rain. All part of the swim school they have attended since they were 1yo.

This always confused me. We had 3 guys from Louisiana in boot camp with me, Navy boot camp, who sank like stones after jumping in the pool. 3 guys joining the navy from Louisiana who couldn't swim. I was amazed. Did they not realize where you are going to be stationed at and spend most of you life while enlisted.

We used to handcuff and chain ourselves and sink to the bottom of the lake with weights on our feet, then see who could escape the quickest using a paperclip.

Late mother in law's brother drowned when they were in high school. She was paralyzed if we drove within a mile of a body of water.

Mother had a friend drown when they were kids. Same as mother in law. Terrified of water to the point we could never go swimming as kids unless there was a lifeguard on duty.

Then why in the blue frick did you pick the NAVY?

You know, that water based branch of the military?

Familiarity with family and friends that were in the Navy. Other than boot camp swimming isn't necessary.

Six teenagers from two families drowned Monday in Shreveport, La.'s Red River while trying to save a friend who had slid into deeper waters.

Those who drowned were the Warners: Takeitha, 13; and her brothers, JaMarcus, 14; and JaTavious, 17. Their cousin, Dekendrix Warner, 15, was rescued. The others killed were the Stewarts: Litrelle, 18; LaDarius, 17; and Latevin, 15.

I shouldn't be laughing but those names certainly check out.

Yep, every single one of our initial unqs in boot camp were black dudes. The basic level of qualification is swimming 25 meters in your boots and cammies and then treading water for 5 minutes.

Evaluate half the Navy and see the majority that can’t swim to save their life

f you live or are going to visit a body of water, you better damn well know how to swim. If you can’t, don’t go around water.
