How is it possible that an adult doesn’t know how to swim?
I mean with very minimum hand/feet movement you will stay afloat. How does someone just sink and drown? It’s harder to stay under the water than above it..

Certain people just don’t swim very well.

I always wondered this myself. Especially being down south where it’s hot 8-9 months a year, how could a person have made it to adulthood and not learned to swim?

I thought I did and then I jumped into a waterfall lagoon in Costa Rica and sank about 20 ft down and almost didn’t make it back up because BeachDude can’t swim all that well.

re: How is it possible that an adult doesn’t know how to swim?
every time this thread comes up I remember this

It’s never left me, but there was a thread here years ago about a bunch of kids drowning in red river. No one there, adults or children, could swim.

Found it

quote:

Six teenagers from two families drowned Monday in Shreveport, La.'s Red River while trying to save a friend who had slid into deeper waters.

Those who drowned were the Warners: Takeitha, 13; and her brothers, JaMarcus, 14; and JaTavious, 17. Their cousin, Dekendrix Warner, 15, was rescued. The others killed were the Stewarts: Litrelle, 18; LaDarius, 17; and Latevin, 15.

quote:

Marilyn Robinson, a friend of the families, told the Times of Shreveport that she watched helplessly as the victims went under. She said a large group of family and friends, including about 20 children, were at the sandbar to barbecue. She said they were familiar with the water.

"None of us could swim," she said. "They were yelling, 'Help me, help me. Somebody please help me.' It was nothing I could do but watch them drown, one by one."

If you live or are going to visit a body of water, you better damn well know how to swim. If you can’t, don’t go around water.

If you have clothes and shoes on, its much more difficult.

Do they believe in circular rivers?

I have often wondered about this myself.

I literally have no concept of not being able to swim. Not being able to swim is as hard for me to imagine as someone not being able to walk.

I was probably swimming before I was walking.

A large portion of Americans live in areas where the climate is not conducive to swimming, and for the same reasons swimming pools are not very common. A significant number, probably half of those that that join the Navy and Marine Corp. cannot swim when they arrive at boot camp. A number of Navy SEALS from the Midwest U.S. did not learn to swim until they decide to become a SEAL. Not knowing how to swim as a adult is anything but un-common.

You’d think most able bodied adults would be able to figure out how to tread water, unless there’s a Mississippi River type current

Usually it is a fear of the water, but there are some people who just sink naturally. It has to do with the volume of you body cavities and muscle density.

My parents never taught me when I was really young.

When I was older (teenage years), I had people try to teach me about a dozen times. Never came close.

As an adult, I'm never around deep water or boats, and most swimming pools give me no issue at my height (6-4).

I have never once been able to float. Not on my back, not on my stomach; I just sink like a rock in all positions.

I went through Navy enlisted and Ocs boot camp and I still don't know how to swim. Like someone said earlier there's a good percentage of enlisted Navy personnel who do not know how to swim. Some like myself aren't around water growing up and develop a fear of water.

re: How is it possible that an adult doesn’t know how to swim?
When I was a kid my dad would mess with me by holding me under until I honestly thought I was about to die before he let me up. That actually helped me become a better swimmer as I got older because I could stay under when my body was fighting for oxygen without panicking.

When I was young and in tip top shape I could stay down for over two minutes.

I remember when I was 8 or 9 we would throw a handful of coins into the deep end of a 10 ft deep pool and see who could come up with the most money in one dive. We had a parent around of course.
