Gas was the same price there a few years back when oil was $140 a barrel. And the cost per barrel and OPEC were the reasons oil companies used for jacking up prices

What excuse are they going to use this year?

Bingo. Govt realized what people are willing to pay and levied taxes accordingly.

You price for what the market is willing to pay, not what it cost to produce, simple economics.

Taxes for one thing.

Another is that gas is not oil. Sure, generally speaking as the price of oil goes up so will gas. But if some other distillate becomes much more valuable (say there's a big run on a certain kind of plastic) that will reduce the supply of gasoline.

It looks like only one station in Hell's Kitchen is doing it so the answer may be closer to "because he can"

I'm fine with their gas tax policy.

NY has a mindboggling volume of commuters. Higher prices may take some of those cars off the roads in lieu of mass transit which is actually pretty good. It may also spur demand for lower cost electric/hybrid vehicles.
