How important is it that your children grow up to hold the same values as you?

My parents are elderly now and I love them dearly, but they are very liberal for having been raised in the South. This is nothing new. I grew up in gentler times of the 70s and 80s, but I always knew where they stood politically. To their credit, they never told me what I had to believe, but it was not until I was out of the house that my views began to change.

I am sure that some here have raised their children in conservative homes, only to have them grow up to be much less conservative.

Is this something that bothers you? Why do you believe your kids went a different direction when other folks' kids did not?

You don't tell anyone, your kids included, what to think. You teach them how to think and provide many examples over the years you have them. If they have the capacity they'll pick up what you're putting down at some point.

My kids get unconditional love. I don't care what they say or do, I will still love them. Disappointed? Sure. Sad? Sure. But they have to live their lives and be accountable to God, family, society, etc. Does that mean I will hide my opinions from them? No. Will I cut them out of the will? Maybe -- depending on how whack-a-doo they get. Will it "bother me"? Not really. Free will is theirs to do with as they please.

There is the chance your children will marry a more liberal or conservative person than you are.

So, be prepared for how your grandchildren will turn out. Maybe I'll be dead and gone and won't have to worry about it.

I’m generally proud, at this point (they are 20 and 22) when they take an opposing stand to what I feel. When they “buck up” it lets me know they are growing into their own men. They are more sheltered than some so for many this may have come earlier in life. Both are still in college and I provide a great deal of support.

My parents are mixed. Not racially, politically.

It’s interesting.

Would be disappointed if they were into extremist views on either side knowing how the world works and how everything isn't black or white. You have to teach them the consequences of every policy decision.

If by "values" you mean a decent work ethic and a sense of entitlement, then yes. I would feel like I didn't properly raise the kid.

Don't forget that the South has always been (D) leaning until LBJ. They've always liked their government intervention, welfare, etc.

It's usually a crazy woman that some conservative-ish dude got knocked up or married. My kids will be fine, I married a Latina, and her mom would say things to my four? year old son like, "what do you have Lemmy Jr? Balls! Big balls! You will be a man!" (I wish she'd said something about broccoli haircuts.)

My uncle (ex-infantry, super nice dude), however, married a counselor/social worker in the midwest. I accompanied them on their first date 30+ years ago. They're now divorced, and their daughter is living in Asheville, and married a tranny. I haven't asked him how he feels about it, but I can sort of tell he's at the "I tried," stage now that he's retired.

There is an old saying, "if you are not liberal when you're young, you have no heart, if you're not conservative when you're older, you have no brain." The harder you push, the more they solidify in their stance against you.

My sisters are way more liberal than I am (gentle parenting, etc.) One was hardcore leftie, but I laid out libertarian bread crumbs for her (FedGov will put a billboard in East Austin in English talking about birth control, when everyone that is local knows it needed to be in Spanish, etc.) It took about eight years, but she now hates most leftie positions, because she knows they negatively impact kids.

Do they support the D party still even though it’s gone way way way far left?

Hard to imagine your parents would be ok with open borders and all this tranny shite

Very important. And it’s worked out well so far. Both attend conservatives universities in the south and were raised right.

Raised them to share family values, its virtues, Godliness, and demonstrated that many times over their childhood.

As for political views, aimed them towards strong critical thinking and to form their own views. Would share my views. And would encourage them to shape their own.

I think we might be brothers. Kidding!

Agree on all points. Similar parenting in this regard.

Teach them what our family values now and they can decide for themselves later.

Well of course, but would you be disappointed if they took another path?

A large percentage of Boomers from the South I knew were consistent Democrats until the 2000 election. They pretty much all supported people like President Carter, Governor Edwards, John Breaux, Mary Landrieu, Bennet Johnson, Bill Clinton.

They would vote Republican every once in a while if the Democrat was pro abortion or they were black.

Louisiana has a populist streak and was considered a "battleground" state in the 80's and90's. I vividly remember President Clinton, President Reagan, President Bush SR and JR, and Bob Dole campaigning here because of that.

I didn't know anyone who voted Republican consistently until I started private school.
