I always ask them to explain what they are talking about.
Then I let them know that I didn’t know about this dreaded plague, thank them for the update, and promise to ‘get right on it’.

Why do you not respect private business's decisions? They choose to enforce the mandates just like many choose not to. Is it too hard for you to respect whichever choice they made?
I don't wear a mask anywhere I go. If asked and I happen to have one with me, I will put it on. But most places don't ask. One liquor store I frequent is fairly progressive and all in on masking. I wear one walking in their since it's thei choice to be that way.

I keep a mask in my pocket. If I see a sign on the door requesting masks be worn I put it on. If I don’t see a sign then I keep it off. It’s amazingly easy to not be an a-hole.

I’m a freedom of choice type person.
If a company mandates a mask to enter, I will wear it if they tell everyone to do it. I don’t like exceptions on it. I don’t wear a mask unless it is absolutely required in a store.
The people working there are just doing their job by telling you, most don’t give a shite personally if you do or not. Don’t give them shite for doing their jobs.
