White people moved.
Business left
Schools have went down

Same situation as many other places in America
Just a different state and name of town.

We now have a choice between two funeral homes. The competition really dropped the prices.

I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi in the 80s. There are plenty of threads to inform you of how it has changed.

I claim the town where I went to most of my schooling as my hometown. It isn't the same town today, so my hometown is a memory.

When my family moved there in 1974, it was an exurb of Jackson, MS. We had to drive at least 3 miles to get to a gas station, and further to get to a grocery store.

Now it's full of car dealerships and 1980s strip malls that are showing their age badly. The subdivision where we lived is full of dated 1970s ranch homes.

40 years old. Lafayette/Broussard area is where I grew up. It's about two or three times the size now as when I was a boy. Used to be the people I would meet were people like myself who's family had been here for years now it's not uncommon to meet people here who aren't even from the Acadiana area. That and the traffic is much worse. I used to be able to drive anywhere across town in like ten minutes now getting anywhere can take half an hour. The crazy thing is the growth seems to have no end in sight so who knows who big it will get here.

Spent my early childhood in Cary, NC, and my adolescence in Collierville, TN.

Cary continues to freaking explode with growth. It is one of the larger cities in the state now. It used to be the third safest suburb in the country but has dipped recently since some of the culcha from Raleigh has invaded.

Collierville is more or less the same with a few new stores and restaurants here and there. It, being a Memphis suburb, is the product of white flight.

Better since 1991? Yeah, no way. Especially since you posted this the other day...

Me too. This is probably the kid that hit my block last week. Caught a guy on camera checking my car door handle Saturday night as well.

Charleston

People and growth
Regrettably, we've had a massive incursion of snowbirds and retirees from Pennsylvania and Ohio. I swear, something about these two states and its people just destroy any sense of culture and tradition. Also, we've had more and more transplants and hipsters relocate here. Some are good and some are douchey. I think some will stay, but the majority will fizzle out and relocate to the next popular city.

Real estate
Charleston was never cheap, but it has become more and more expensive.

Crime
Overall, crime has decreased. Shocking to some, Charleston had a pretty bad crime reputation in the 90s and early 2000s. A lot of it now is segmented to North Charleston.

Economy
The port is still strong and stable, Boeing plant brought a lot of jobs and we have more and more tech/IT startups, but as its still a tourism-focused city.

The newcomers to the Westbank since Katrina have destroyed any desire for me to return. There's always been bad pockets there growing up, sure, but that small town relatively safe feeling is long gone.

It's a suburb of Kansas City that stopped growing around 1970 and has been slowly decaying since. Lots of people moved over to the Kansas side where things are booming. Honestly, it's changed less than almost any place I can think of. Just everything and everyone is old and run down. Not really white flight, but it's on the edge and people can see the writing on the wall.
