I was about 6 months ago. But I would do what i had to to make money.
The statement I replied to is pretty sad. Give up basically and except your paper pusher job. Screw that. I would go for a blue collar job that paid more and gave me self satisfaction

Not to be cliché, but this is the "participation trophy" society come to roost.
Judge Smalls was right...the world needs ditch-diggers too.
College used be for the very well off (who didn't need financial assistance), or the high academic achieving "others" (who did need such aid, but who the schools realized deserved the help to reward those deserving). For those on the edges, there was "State U" where you could go, booze it up for 4-5 years, get a degree (maybe) and then go on to a white collar existence.
In the late 70s/early 80s, there was still nobility in labor and the trades. Then, it became "gauche" and "low class" to be a blue collar worker. You HAD to go to college, or you were worthless. It's bullshite.

why do you think people are choosing college over blue collar jobs in droves? why did blue collar parents in the 70s and 80s save to send their kids to college?

The low paying ones are in my book.

I've been tempted to cash in my retirement, take the tax hit, and just pay off my debt to clean the slate. I'd be a lot less stressed having that extra income to build the savings.
I'm still young enough to where I can start over on retirement and be ok.

I had loans, too. I had Federal aid, TOPS, scholarships, and I still had to take out loans. But I got a physics degree and married someone who got a masters without paying a dime.
The truth comes out. Baw prob. had 10-12K in loans, and with all that education doesn't realize he's comparing apples to oranges.

if we're generalizing here such as you did with paper pushers, i'd say that most people capable of getting to college don't want to turn wrenches in the heat, climb around in attics, or fix shitters. those jobs DO pay well and people still don't take them.

Or, as difficult as it may be - hear me out here, maybe it was because they worked their asses off for 20+ years in a labor intensive job that they hated & wished for their childrens' lives to be better.

I had this discussion with some coworkers and a customer pretty high up in a larger refining company. We talked about how more kids needed to look at trades as opposed to college and all agreed some kids aren’t cut out for college and shouldn’t go there.
I ended the conversation with this though, I’m doing everything possible to make sure all my kids go to college, my coworkers both sent all of their kids through college, and the refining customer had his kids at private colleges. We were all saying everyone else’s kids needed to go to trade school, but mine still needed to go to college.

I am so sick of hearing this BS.
I used student loans. I paid them off in 3.5 years and I started off my first job out of college making $10/hr.
This could be the most ignorant post I've seen to date.

At least there is competition for students with so many colleges. The REAL problem is the interest rates. The US government should be lending money to students at a 0 to 1% rate. After all, it's an investment in our country. No way should the interest rate be over 3% No way.
