Gotcha. I never knew that.

Welcome aboard!

that’s true it does help. You will see the state police at all these college events talking bs about how as long as you meet the qualifications you have just as good a shot as the next guy. Couldn’t be further from the truth.

Getting off topic, but I stand by my original statement. Op don’t listen to the bs the state will tell you. They want the numbers so they can say 1000 people applied.

Unless you're Sherlock Holmes you have to earn your keep on the streets before you become a detective.

Usually you have to start off doing the most basic assignments before applying

How I got hired.
Got out of the army in California and needed a job.
My first drill with the California national guard my first sgt worked for the City of Los Angeles. He knew I was just out of the army and helped me go through the process. At the time I applied they had a huge need for candidates that could pass the test. I was too late for the first academy, so I worked in the jails until the next Academy had openings. I had a lot of people that helped me along with the process.

Typically you have to spend x amount of hours in the field in Uniform Patrol, have strong evaluations, and go above minimum expectations to even be considered for a position like you are asking about.

My best advice is if you are not 100% into it do not do it. After I earned my MBA I woke up to what I was doing. At that point I only had 8 yrs left to retire. My advice if you do not like it within a year or two move on to another line of work.

If you want to be great or get a lot of experience where you can retire becoming a consultant apply to a larger dept like the LAPD, NYPD, etc.

With the state it’s a little different.

Most departments hire throughout the year as needed.

With state police, they hire a whole Academy class (40-50) once or twice a year....skipping some years. So they build up a applicant pool over 12-18 months and hire from that. So you get stuck waiting for them to hire a class.

Yea I’m familiar with the state. I graduated college in 13. Was flat out not told the complete truth by the recruiters for months. Made it all the way to the interview. It went well. Met with the captain of troop a. He was a flat out jerk. Said why would I hire you when I can hire someone that has a trooper to vouch for them. I told him
What the recruiters had been telling me and he flat out laughed. Wasted time. Although my life has worked out great, I have always been a little salty towards the state. Thank God I have a degree and it wasn’t in criminal justice. Haha

Did you move on from law enforcement or you work for another agency?

No I decided to use my business degree. I thought about it, but got an incredible offer from a company I met with during college so I have been with them since. It still bothers me how the state went down. Not that I should have been accepted, because they had better qualified people, but with how the state went about deceiving people like me. They had me firmly believing I was what the state was looking for. After meeting with the cap, I’m the last type of person they are looking for(and that’s okay with me). Just be honest.

Do you have a chip on your shoulder?
Are you a douche bag?
Do you like being recorded by every wannabe lawyer with a phone?

If so....you're hired

Not disregarding your story, but one occurrence doesn’t necessarily make that the normal practice.

Once you make it as a cop, every move up requires a blow job.

I would agree with you if I didn’t hear it directly from the captain of troop a’s mouth.

I applied for a part time / reserve position just out of curiosity. In 2000 at 19 years old the idea of having a job that was exciting and fun and making 40k a year to do it sounded awesome

19 year old me was a fricking idiot and I blame him for all of my shortcomings in life
