If this was the Money board, or Bogleheads, the absolute answer is hell no. Buy a vehicle that is one or two on consumer reports for quality, then drive it until the wheels fall off. Pay cash, no extended warranty. Then 10 years or more down the road do it again. If you have to have a vehicle that will in all likelihood break down, rethink that logic.

I’ve got a 2019 F150, after factory warranty went out I bought a 3rd party warranty from Endurance. Transmission went out after I’d made about 6 monthly payments on new warranty. Endurance paid for a new transmission. Cancelled the warranty as it has a $10k max payout and it was reached. So paid about $1K out of pocket and got a new transmission

What is the make of vehicle? Shop around but make sure it's a warranty offered by the manufacturer

If the dealer wants you to buy it, it's probably not in your best interest.

Check with your car insurance. GEICO offers “Mechanical Breakdown Coverage” which I would trust WAAAAY more than 3rd party warranty companies

When I bought my Rav4, their last-ditch effort to get me to add the extended warranty (8 years/100k miles) was dropping my interest to 2.9%. So I bought it. Covered me 2 years past payoff, so I thought it was worth it. Came in handy when a cheap plastic clip that cost 400$ to replace was broken though. So far, so good.

If you have a new car, say an F150.
New 2025 Ford F-150s come with a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Why would you buy a four year warranty that covers the same stuff ?
I just bought a Bronco, and the dealership gave me a lifetime warranty for as long as I own the vehicle, provided I keep up with scheduled maintenance, which I plan to have done at the dealership.

You bought from Matt Bowers? He advertises free lifetime warranties.

They sound like a good money maker for the dealerships.

Saved me thousands of dollars. My first was used Yukon. Couple years old warranty timing out in 6 months. Buy extended warranty till 100000 miles. Paid cash for it at a little over 1000.00, bumper to bumper. First alternator went out, 1500. Electronic shite happened, over 500.00. 50.00 deductible. Now this was back in the late 90’s. Wife just bought a used KIA and bought extended warranty and how few miles she drives, no worries on breakdowns

This!!!!!!
Start with a rainy day fund. It’s like a warranty that earns you money (compounding interest + no warranty costs needed) and can be applied to vehicles, home repair, etc…not just vehicle.
This path to pay cash will save FAR more interest than extended warranty or repairs will cost.
Win the financial war by avoiding the warranty / repair battles…so to speak!
This is path to wealth building, and owning some nice vehicles, in doing so.

In the past they were able to price them to be ripoffs in total.
With all the new tech (and issues caused by that tech) in vehicles today, I have a feeling the warranties may be priced too low for the risk, which makes them more appealing if my gut is correct.
