Say the car is $20,000, you can't say bring cash not going to accept a check how does someone sell a car that most people need someone to finance for them?

Wait for the check to clear before you give them the keys

There are private party auto loans

meet them at their bank/lender. Have company issue you a check, not the individual.

Yes, you absolutely can.

Oh I owe 10k on it, so how does that work too

If you're buying a new car, usually the dealer will be willing to handle it. Plus you save on taxes.

This.
And I bought my daughters car with cash. But that was a private dealer.
Best bet is to have them give you a certified check that is validated by your own bank.

Certified check from bank, funds verified in minutes.

Get the $20k from their bank and then go pay off your loan

The best option is meeting at your bank that has the title & lien. They'll have a good Bill of Sale form, and someone to call whoever the buyer got their loan & cashiers check from to verify funds. Or you can meet at their bank to either get cash or cashiers check. Regardless of whose bank you meet at, the buyer is just going to get a bill of sale; the title gets mailed from the state in (ideally) a few weeks.

Take it to car max or whatever that place is called.

Jeez you should probably just trade in.

Two options.
1. The buyer goes to his bank and sets up an electronic transfer to be executed with a phone call. Both parties meet at the business that HOLDS the title to the vehicle for sale. Provide them both the seller and the buyers drivers licenses and then transfer the funds electronically. Fill out a bill of sale. Shake hands and be on your way. Title company mails the seller the title.
Meanwhile, the buyer holds $1000 out of the deal until the title arrives.
Once title is mailed to the seller, you both meet at the buyers bank and the seller can watch the buyer withdrawl the money and hand it to him in exchange for the title.
2. Assume the seller holds the title and in that case, you just meet at the buyers bank branch and the seller can watch him get cash or a counter check filled out and then exchange the car, bill of sale, and title.
Number one is such a hassle, I have stopped doing it. If you don't own your car and have the title, I am not even coming too look at the car.
Any other means, you are probably getting scammed. I had a neighbor sell his lexus for over 20 grand and accepted cash in his driveway. When he went to deposit it, the bank discovered the fraud. He had no idea. Car and title gone. No cash and no leads two years later.
