How do you know when times up for you cat?

Woke up this morning to mine acting very strange. He’s pacing around our kitchen sticking his paws in his water bowl, sniffing like he’s trying to find something, finding him in tight spots just standing there (like behind our dresser (not sure if knows how to get himself out or if he’s purposely wants to be left there), not scared of our vacuum.
His sugar levels are normal. He is 17 years old. He showed absolutely no signs last night.
Came home after dropping my son off to hearing my daughter ball her eyes out before heading to the bus stop. It takes a lot to make me tear up but she got me.
Is it time?

17 is very old for a cat. The water paw thing isn’t too concerning. They probably have bad vision and need to judge where the water is. I have 1 year old cats that do the same.
They could be getting close to that time, but it doesn’t sound like they are in pain.

Is your cat still eating well? That's usually a big indicator

Talk to an actual vet. They can advise you better. My wife and I always get dog rescues that are older and I have had to make the decision many times, but never without a vets opinion first.

It depends, are Haitians involved?

Cats are just strange. Things to look for are when they start to go to the bathroom in strange places that they never did before or stop grooming.

This is the key. They'll stop eating and drinking when it's time. 17 is getting close to the end but I've had one for 18 years before. Sorry about you're lil mee-nu. I cried when putting down both my previous cats. Held them until the end though.

Geez, 17yrs old, probably lived 3-5yrs more then it should have.

17 is not uncommon for a cat. I've had a few make it that long or longer. When they stop eating and start losing weight is the biggest indicator.

It's when they stop eating and start looking for a place to die.

I've been involved with multiple cats that made it to 20. Last one survived the Denham Springs flood at around 19

Yeah we inherited a pair of old ladies that are both over 20. Survived Rita and Laura under the house, outside.
One started coming inside and passed a couple of years ago. Then the other one started coming inside to find her friend and never left. Currently is on the bed upstairs.
She's starting to go senile but she also has plenty of just pure a-hole in her so it's hard to tell on a day to day basis which is the cause of her peculiarities.

A girl I know swears her cat is 28 years old. I think that she's full of shite.

Yup.
OP's cat is most likely starting to have renal failure. I had two cats for about 16 years (brother and sister), and eventually they deteriorated. When I took them to the vet he said if felines live long enough, they will all die from renal failure, which was something I never knew.

When the cat won’t leave.

There are end of life checklists to help you determine when it’s time. I don’t think your cat is there from your description.

I have a 17 year old cat now, still going strong for her age. Scares the 100lbs labrador we have still
In the past the signs of our other cats
1. Vision starting going out and started bumping into things. You will see their whiskers start pointing forward when the vision gets worse. Had to be put down.
2. Just quit eating and drinking. You could see the cat getting skinnier, over month. She went peacefully in her sleep, and we knew it was coming. Probably the easiest one ever.
3. Cancer. Started seeing tumors on face around mouth. Had them removed, but came back a few years later. Had to be put down.
