how do you find "FREE" records of liens and bankruptcy or lawsuits against a business owner?
thinking about doing a garage project and the BBB is useless since crooks simply have to pay them to get A+ ratings and remove bad reviews so the BBB is just a fraud, found this out the hard way already with my last contractor
so how can you find out, as best as you can, what contractors to avoid?
so far the places i see in searches make you click through BS until they tell you you have to pay to see the background check, usually for a $30-$50 fee

Have you ever encountered something that wasn't a big conspiracy against you?

Go to the clerk’s office in whichever parish/county you’re in.

This. And check out their website. Some of them let you search online.

Just a little FYI, this is a terrible way to ascertain the quality of a contractor. People file liens for all kinds of bullshite. You’ll probably be shocked at how many you’ll find.

i understand you have to take such things as liens with a grain of salt
but a bankruptcy and a bunch of lawsuits can give you red flags to avoid someone if they seem well founded
im not seeing anything good or bad about the guy, the lack of finding anything positive or negative about him is troubling
he is licensed and insured but that is all i know
his communication skills are very lacking, not returning phone calls or messages, seems a bit unorganized as far as getting documents to me.
all of that "can be" explained away as a small business and he is very busy, or it could be indicative of something is less then professional and perhaps shady

Go to a privately owned lumber yard in your area meaning not Lowes or Home Depot or something similar, tell them what your are doing and ask for recommendations and specifically ask if there is anyone to avoid.

Best results come from paying attention to work being done close to your area. Find a crew doing the work you are looking to have completed. Make sure they follow thru with completion of job and that customer was happy with their work.
Now if your trying to get by cheap then your playing Russian roulette and could end up happy or could have similar experience as last time. If the cost of work is better than you expected then this crew doesn’t have enough work. Reasons for that can vary but most are not good.

i couldnt care less about liens he put on deadbeat customers, every contractor gets that, im guessing 5% of customers just dont pay so im only looking at liens customers put on him for shoddy work or not doing the work as promised

even if he isnt from my parish?
i wasnt sure about that part if it was just that parish or if it shared access to all the records state wide from all parishes

Most local courts have free online systems to check for party names. Some require payment to dig into deeper detail. If your contractor's business or a related personal name shows up as a defendant in a bunch of lawsuits that's at least worth looking into more.

Clerk of court ..
Also, I don't know where you live, but if you go to a lumber yard/building materials store (I don't know if you can easily find this out at Home Depot or Lowes) and just talk with people.
They will happily tell you what contractors to avoid, especially if that contractor owes them money. It's amazing the information you can get just by going talk with people who work with contractors.

If you want to see liens, you’ll have to check mortgage and conveyance records of the various parishes you suspect he might have them.
If you want to see bankruptcy filings, you can check with the federal clerk in whichever federal district he resides in.

You just have to accept that all contractors are thieves, and hope you pick the least dishonest one.

For bankruptcy, just go to federal courthouse and get on Pacer for free or sit at home and get a Pacer account.

Look for recorded liens, bankruptcys and lawsuits at Clerk of Courts website or public records file for the jurisdiction your subject , lives in , works .

thanks
im just trying to get some sort of independent reviews info that isnt from him or just being based on finding nothing negative.
he has good ratings on all the places that list contractors, but there are no reviews good or bad or anything i can find for issues reported.
so far even the clerks offices all want $20 or more to get a report that they say "may or may not" show anything
i wouldnt mind paying a few dollars to see something if i know something is there but i do not want to waste money just to be told they can find no reviews or records of complaints.
he has high ratings on all those angies list type contractor lists, but that is all there is to find about him.
its a small garage so as far as projects go its small so maybe the communication issues are due to him just not seeing such a small profit margin job as worth better customer communication then im getting. other then that im happy with everything else about the company
