A family friend is a LEO in Chicago, going on 25 + yrs & this came up in a conversation last summer. He said that in a lot of the larger cities, the homeless are organized & controlled by lower level mobsters wanna bees. Their runner gathers them at a meeting place, gets them in a van & then drops them off, one at a time, at various locations around the city. The "mobster" gets the first $150....from each person...the runner gets the next $100 & then the homeless person gets the rest, whatever that amount may be. If they fail to meet their daily quota, they are dropped. Don't see this happening locally but it is out there.

I used to feel empathetic, and then the light would turn green and I would go on about my day. In Austin these days, there are colonies of tents, legally allowed to camp under highways and around the green spaces. You can go for a run and see some guy posted up like he's at a state park. Needless to say, my empathy is gone and I'm firmly in the camp of not in my backyard.

I feel bad for the mentally ill. In general I try to keep a "there but for the grace of God go I" perspective for the others but I find myself becoming more and more jaded as the younger able-bodied ones around here become pushier and greater in numbers.

Most of the time I feel bad, but the ones who harass you all day? So annoyed.

The ones with a house (like the pink lady in the east off read), furious.

The worst was when someone walked up to me at a gas station when I was in college. He asked me for food, I was on my way to rallys across the street anyway so I told him sure I'll bring you something from rallys.

He goes and asks, "oh can you get me a buford with fries and a Coke please"

Bruh. Beggars can't be choosers.

Historically we didn't have a lot of them around BR but that's changed fairly dramatically in the past 10 years or so. One thing that pisses me off is the litter they leave everywhere.

If I see a vet, I will usually give them some money. Honestly, no vet should have to beg, period. If you served this country, you should have a place to go. The last time I felt really sorry for a guy on the street was a Marine who was on a corner the last time I went to NOLA. He had a sign and it said, USMC Vet. 3 Tours. Just need money to get back home. He looked like he was just down on his luck. I had about $300 on me. I doubled back, rolled down my window, and in about 20 seconds confirmed he was legit, and gave him all my money. I wish I could have done more because no Devil that went to the sandbox 3 times should be on the street. Period.

There's a woman with a "Please Help - Homeless" sign who intermittently stands at the exit to a popular shopping center not far from my work. Saw her there today, in fact.

She's always clean, not too shabbily dressed - today she was in a tank top, jean shorts (not cutoffs) and hiking boots. Every time I've seen her she's had her long brown hair pulled through a baseball cap.

She's white, looks to be in her mid-to-late 20s, early 30s at the oldest. Actually has a cute face and a not-unattractive body.

She doesn't fit the typical homeless person profile at all. I often wonder what her backstory is.

You want to give her the fairy tale, don't you?

I give money to charities that take care of the homeless, but I am not going to open my car window to hand out $ to someone on the street.

Saw a guy on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. He was dressed in a clean, pressed Army uniform, hair neatly trimmed, aviator sunglasses, hat, and headphones. A tin cup sat in front of him, where his legs would have been. He said nothing. He asked for nothing. He held no sign. Just stared straight ahead. I doubled back and put a $5 in his cup. In a strong voice, he said, "Thank you, sir." I said, "No, thank you."

never give money, but I will give them food.

I have a bleeding heart coworker who gave one food the other day, he ate it and threw the wrapper on the ground.

Being a do gooder she told him to pick it up, he told her to frick off. She learned her lesson.

For reasons that I won’t share, I have a bit of a soft spot for the homeless

I typically give them something if I have something. I tend to give food over money since many of these people have serious substance abuse issues and will deny themselves nutrition over their addiction

I think its detestable that people pass judgement on the homeless. They literally do not deserve it.

Many people expect the government to take care of these people but as conservatives, we need to avoid this line of thinking. It’s incumbent on us as citizens to care for those in need

The young ones steal too much.

I hate car theft/vandalism. They know they can't drive off with your car unless they have the fob, but they want to break in anyways any look around.

Or try to make off with your catalytic converter or some bullshite.

I watched a movie a few years ago called Reversal of Fortune. Basically they found a homeless guy and gave him $100,000 and he agreed to let them document him. The dude could have turned his life around and the directors attempted to help him along the way. Instead he bought like 2 cars, got drunk at the bar nightly, and blew the rest on furniture or something. I now believe it’s really hard to help a person when they won’t even help themself.

I can’t disagree with your list, but here’s some additions to it.

Some of them have just given up, some don’t want to play by society’s rules, some are just lazy.

I feed them. That's a good test for which ones are legit and which ones are scammers.
