i'm very nostalgic. i don't like throwing away memorable items that remind me of people i've had in my life.

Same here. Really regret tossing some stuff years ago

they were blown away that i was going to throw out things like my yearbook, tball team pics, etc. i don't get it. i don't look at this stuff and haven't in years
I would keep them if I were you.

I'm not one to horde - prolly because I've moved a lot in my life and you get used to traveling light.
On the other hand, I've tossed momentos I wish I had now. As others have said, a lot of it would have been for my kids' benefit.
At the end of the day, my rationalization is this: if I get alzheimer's, I wouldn't recognize half that shite anyway...

I'm sentimental about that kind of stuff. There is a line between momentos and hoarding tho...

there's no right or wrong answer to this. But, i definitely wish i still had some of that stuff.

So you are talking about THREE boxes? That's it? You made it seem like you were cleaning out a hoarder's nest worth of shite.
Keep that stuff man, your kids will definitely enjoy it. At a minimum, try to store it digitally.

I’m on the fence about things like this. Over the years ‘ve thrown away most of my stuff so I don’t have a lot. Most of what I do have is actually things from past generations. My kids were shocked to learn that I threw away my HS and college diplomas. I feel they represented more of unnecessary necessities than academic achievements.
My suggestion would be to offer stuff to siblings, cousins, etc. If they don’t want it, let it go.

This. I'm already forgetting lots of stuff that's happened, even in my adult life. I'm scanning photos, but not throwing them away, I need this stuff to reconnect with my life.

Are you talking about the panties of past girlfriends?
I mean, not to smell them or anything. That would be weird.

My philosophy: If I haven't used it in a year or more, I don't need it.
If at some time in the future I SHOULD need it (unlikely, yet vaguely possible), I can just get another one.

Your mom didn’t want to hold on to it?

If there's any foods that you like, I suggest you put your name on it. Or else it'll be thrown out. by me

I don't care for your use of the word tactile. It sounds gross.

Throw that shite away. I'm not living in clutter just so some great grand kid can look at my picture for 5 seconds 100 years from now.

the memories still exist
these are just tactile mementos representing them. it's stuff that i literally never look at
The human mind is not a simple storage device. You can't just store and retrieve memories willy-nilly.
Photographs are important because seeing these things will jog your memory and give you the ability to recall more details than just thinking about it alone will.
