Yeah, there are two sides to it. In theory I think he did the right thing, but in reality it wasn't really the best interest of the country to see that all the documents he acquired was published.

I think part of it had to do with the fact he didn't know right away exactly what he was being involved in.

A government as big and sophisticated as the US has to protect itself and in order to do so that means having the capability to do things that are controversial.

Are we really damaged? I don't see anything damaged at all. He is a patriot. Screw the federal government and their incursion on our rights. The intent of the federal government is a weak central government to regulate the states and international dealings. 99% of what they are doing, they should not be.

What if they are spying on you and they video you having sex and then all of a sudden there is a twitter bot that puts it on twitter and all of a sudden it goes viral?

Yes, or there never would have been a need for his actions

He's a hero and the United States government is the biggest threat to our liberties and freedoms.

I'm in the hero camp. But, I think it's interesting that some poli brethren that I respect think he is a CIA plant to make NSA good guys look bad.

Because he was a CIA spook sent in to destroy the NSA surveillance network. Why? Because the CIA wants to control it all, bigger budget, and tell others all the answers.

He had access to the CIA's programs and didn't disclose those when he had a chance. He, himself, never disclosed CIA programs, only the NSA's. So, in one instance he is a hero, in another, he is just like the rest, scum.

Honest question as I don't now, what was the fallout of all this from the government's side? Nothing at all? Did folks get fired, jailed?

I know they're still doing it now, so I'm guessing not a whole lot.

Then why would the CIA not protect him?

I would agree. I don’t know or can’t remember if his original plan was to leak it all or if he wanted to use the additional data as leverage to avoid criminal charges before Obama’s Justice department went after him hard forcing him to flee to Russia and give up data for asylum. The later might just be part of the hero fairytale some needed to discount the additional leaking of data dealing with more external sources that at least initially caused us some harm abroad.

Agreed. And we have it better than most, not all.

I like Prez. Trump, but I cringe when he says things like, "abandon the 2-year term." The Patriot Act in following 9/11 was also, in my opinion, a large overstep on the boundaries for which our country infringed on our constitutional rights as citizens.

I think these fall out of the eye of the press far too easily, as it's a bit more complex and not as "sexy" as gun control or impeachment proceedings.

I haven't finished the book and not sure if it mentions anything about this because I don't think anything became of it.

The only damage it did was to himself.

Trump should give him a pardon so that he can come back to the U.S. without prosecution...

You can’t be serious... if the info he leaked put one person safety in danger he’s a traitor...regardless of his reasoning... truth will eventually come to the light doesn’t make it his crusade... he did this to be famous

You don't give away greatness. The Louvre doesn't let people see the Mona Lisa for free, do they?

I think Snowden is a patriot, but I also think he broke the law. The two are not mutually exclusive. Patriots usually are breaking laws.

Just from reading his book I can't subscribe to this. I honestly believe he thought he was doing the right thing.

Good guy, but also I think he probably didn’t do it all out of the goodness of his heart, some axe to grind/something left unsaid in his story.

Given the cost to his life, I don’t think it’s all that important if part of his motivation was more selfish than he lets on. He did a good thing and has paid the price for it.
