How do you avoid a long phone conversation?

I hate the dreaded text that says “do you have time to talk?” or “are you free right now?”
I’m not talking about work related issues. This is more reserved for acquaintances, friends, family. I have 3 people in my life that are capable of turning a 10 minute conversation into 45 minutes or longer. I can only say “uh huh” and “yeah” so many times. I guess it’s my personality, but after a day’s work, the last thing I want to do is chat for another hour unless it’s important or necessary. Otherwise…can it not wait for an in-person interaction?
Does anybody have any good excuses to get off the phone asap?

Not answering would be my only suggestion

"I have to take a shite"
"Someone else is calling"
"I think someone is outside let me call you back"
Slight sigh and pause* "Alright I need to go ____ but I'll talk to you later"

Say I have another call I have to take.
Posted on 11/18/25 at 11:52 am to TexasTiger08
Say, "Sure, I have about 5m before I need to _______".
Then set a timer for 7m... end the convo with a "Yikes! I was supposed to ________ two minutes ago, can we pick this up later? Thanks for calling!"

I have a friend who always texts "Give me a call when you get a minute".
JUST FREAKIN' TELL ME WHAT IT'S ABOUT!!!!!!
Same with a voicemail.

Is anyone else getting texts like this from unknown numbers?
Such a weird way to scam

Weren’t you on the brink of self destruction not too long ago feeling lonely needing someone to talk to?

Set expectations immediately. Say yes, but have an appointment shortly.
Or reply, give me a call, and answer like you’re tied up, but have a quick minute.
Overall, don’t be a weirdo kid thats scared to actually talk to someone. Most 5 minute conversations can solve days of back and forth texts/emails. I encourage my employees to pick up the phone.
Nothing is more frustrating/eye rolling to a manager/executive than hearing, “I sent an email/text and haven’t heard back.” Well he literally sits 20ft away. Can we not go poke our head in his office?

I wouldn’t turn down someone “needing to talk”. Unless I’m reading these seemingly well-put together folks wrong, they are fine. It’s mostly one-sided gossiping.
And yes…I talked to a pastor, therapist, and fine people like yourself on TD.

I feel like I can put someone off a couple of times, but eventually a conversation needs to be had.

Please explain the issue to me of having an actual conversation with someone to solve an issue? What am I missing?

Have kids? Give them something glass that they can break and have them slam it on the ground (in a controlled manner of course) and start screaming. Then just bust out "oh shite, gotta go" and abruptly hang up.

Them: "Yadda, yadda, blah, blah, blah, yip, yap, yadda......"
Me: "Uh. Oh.....woah! I've gotta shite, bye!"

No, it doesn't. There is obviously no problem being solved or addressed.

My wife will leave work, while I'm still working for another two hours, just to call and let me know she's on the way home, and then doesn't say anything else expecting me to continue the conversation. Drives me up a fricking wall. I'm going to see you in twenty minutes, pay attention to the damn road and we'll talk when you're home!

When I had to go into a client before 6AM, there were always women pulling into the garage having full blown conversations with other women (I could hear through the rolled up windows five parking spots away.) EVERY DAY. BEFORE SIX IN THE MORNING. WTF needs to talk about the church fundraise or whatever inane bullshite that early in the morning?

Straight up tell them I gotta go.
If you don’t like it then don’t call me and talk for an hour when it could be a text. I’m here to help but it’s easier if I read than listen to you whine while I get nothing done
