How do some people go their whole lives watching football and not learning the rules?

Seems to mostly happen with women but some men too. People who every fall show up to watch parties, year after year, and just cheer when there’s a touchdown. I just couldn’t imagine going to games, centering weekends around a game, etc without knowing what pass interference is 
I’m sure they still have fun but it confuses me. Especially when it takes like 5 minutes to learn and then you just know the basic rules forever.

It cuts both ways. My wife's dad "was a ref" (he actually was) so she grew up watching games and learning. So she watches like she's trying to break down film which is annoying AF sometimes.

My late wife of 48 years was a big Tiger fan, but had no concept of what was happening on the field. She had no idea of the difference between a QB and a DT, but she loved the Tigers and cheered until she was hoarse for our team. Miss her so much.

Yeah there’s definitely a middle ground to not breaking down why Cover 3 won’t work here and not knowing what offsides is or why everyone is upset about a bogus penalty.
ETA: I’m also not saying the people I’m talking about can’t be super fans and love their team. I just think it’d be that much more enjoyable if they didn’t spend half the game confused.

Hell, the announcers and even former players who color commentate don't always know. I've lost count of the times someone has talked about needing to call a timeout to stop the clock on a change of possession

My wife went to a magnet school that didn’t even have a football team. Then she went to a small liberal arts college where sports were an afterthought. When we started dating, I took her to a game in Starkville and she thought it was the craziest thing in the world that so many people would show up for a football game (even though State’s stadium is one of the smallest in the SEC). And my MiL tries to act like she knows what is going on, but she refers to the SEC as the “SECK”. My dad, my wife, and I all get a big kick out of that when she mentions it when she is in town.

My mom went to hundreds of Auburn games, but I don't think she ever really had more than a cursory understanding of the game. She enjoyed the spectacle, but hated getting caught in traffic and would insist on leaving early, no matter what was going on on the field. Drove me crazy until I was old enough to tell her to go on, I'd find a way home.
My wife had never been to a game, at any level, until I took her to her first one. Her opinion of college football and its fans was pretty low, but I go her hooked. She may not know all the positions or rules, but she's pretty darn perceptive and definitely into it.

I'd be willing to bet that without googling, most couldn't tell the difference in rules between the college and NFL game much less those obscure rules like a free kick or a snap between the QB's legs.

My wife went to one college football game in her life and left at halftime. She hates football but pulls for the saints a little bit as a regional pride thing. She doesn't hate all sports though. She used to be an equestrian and likes baseball as well as most Olympic sports.

I'd be shocked if more than 60% of voters can name our branches of government and a basic description of their roles.

Casual fans of sports don't bother me, not sure why they should. I follow F1 pretty closely and we go with a group of friends to at least 2 each year. Some are casual fans that like the party, some like me are lifelong fans that follow pretty closely and some can literally cite chapter and verse from both the sporting and technical regulations. We all have a great time and are comfortable with our technical understanding of the rules, or we would change it.
As for PI keeping up with what is and isn't PI in multiple levels of the sport over to the last decade is damn near like work.
What bugs me is people that argue over the rules but don't know them and often are sitting at a computer and could look them up. The Memphis/State punt return for a touchdown yesterday is an example. It is really simple what the refs got right and wrong but tons of State fans were arguing the ball should not have been live. The ball was never properly downed, period. There were errors on the play by the refs but the biggest errors were on the State special teams.

There are a lot of arcane rules that I doubt even coaches know. One time in HS we had too many men on the field. One of our guys was closer to the opposite sideline so he ran off over there. Unsportsmanlike conduct which ended up costing us the game.

I pointed out that we ran an Rpo last night like 3 seconds before the announcer did last night. Mrs. S looked at me like i had hung the moon. She hadn’t given me that look since I told her i had been accepted into Cornell Law.

Can you explain the ruffing the passer rule in the NFL. Seems like it changes every year.
