Referring to Government mandated

I hate government mandates. If companies want to offer maternity and/or paternity leave, then good for them. It should not be mandated.

BTW my wife will be a vet and work for herself. We wont have the luxury of maternity leave so no, we wont ever be in a situation where co-workers can "return the favor".

they'll be returning the favor by working for substandard wages with little to no benefits and doing everything they can to help a struggling, entry level vet try to start a business, maintain a lifestyle, and pay off student loans, all at the same time

Constantly come in late? no

constantly coming in late is not the norm for parents, so this has nothing to do with that, but rather shitty employees

but it does happen on occasion as a parent

you realize their are other reasons for extended medical leave, right?

they are not all voluntary, but accidents or diseases can cause this and would cause your coworkers to cover for you

that is what I'm talking about

I feel like 6 is fine but 12 made it a lot easier for us.

If women are going back to work, and the baby is going to daycare, I don't think 6 weeks is enough. Babies don't get certain really important vaccinations until 8 weeks, so it should be at least then. Not to mention, a lot of babies pick up small things like colds and what not when they first go to daycare. If a baby is younger than 3 months and they pick up some common virus or bug and the temp. gets up to 100.4, it's usually an automatic trip to an ER and a spinal tap for the baby, if I remember correctly (it may be 8 weeks).

Birth can also be pretty traumatizing on the body. Both my kids were c-section babies. Baby Bham 1 was a particularly brutal recovery, because no only was the c-section not planned, but I'd already labored for 15 hours before we had to have the c-section. It took several weeks before I was fully recovered from that.

Additionally, you typically need a few months to establish breastfeeding. Most pediatricians agree that breastfeeding is best, however the number of women who stop breastfeeding because of difficulties after going back to work is pretty high, especially if they go back earlier than 12 weeks.

I'm fine with men taking paternity leave. Mr. Bham took a few days completely off and then worked remotely for 11 of my 12 weeks with both of ours.

Maternity leave in all honesty should be twelve weeks minimum and it shouldnt be shite on and frowned upon like it is in this country.

We've come along way on that, but companies still frick over new moms pretty regularly.

As far as paternity leave goes, I can never decide where I land on that. It should probably be a couple weeks just to help the family out of the hospital and getting settled.

A lot of this.

We have a 12 month old. My wife took 10 weeks using FMLA. She was NO WHERE near ready to go back to work after 6. Not physically but even more not emotionally.

Do you know Suzie? Does she help you in the office? Would she help you out in a bind? What about her family- have you met them? Most times when you cover for someone they are likely to help you in return down the road.

Yes I do. We both help each other out as our jobs require us to assist while the other is out of the office. I have met her husband and he's a dick so there's that.

I just simply dont see a scenario where I will need it for an extended amount of time.

You can't imagine a scenario when you might possibly need to take some time off work?

I know that currently the US is the last Western country not offering maternity leave at a federal level.

How long do you think Maternity leave should be. The common limit is 6 weeks at the most for the US.

Should Paternity and Maternity leave be equal. This is why I dislike the feminist movement,it only looks at things from one angle.

ETA: Referring to Government mandated leave for mothers and fathers like in the other western nations (Europe and Australia)

frick. You really need to find a job. I'm almost willing to offer you one, so you quit posting stupid shite.

What this really comes down to is a question of what you consider to be basic human rights. Do you think that women have both the right to work and the right to have children? If the answer is yes then you should think that maternity leave (not necessarily paid) should be mandated. If it you think it isn't a right then maternity leave shouldn't be mandated. That's the reduction of it at least.

People like this usually change their minds when big life events happen to them. Like a wife getting cancer and they have to go to work to keep them alive for health insurance, or a parent gets dementia and there's no one to help. Maybe they think no one will make time to help them if they get sick?

What if your wife had a c section with complications? You realize a C-section is still considered surgery?

Maybe she had so many complications that she needs a lot of help with the baby for a couple of weeks so that she can properly recover?

Imagine your stomach was cut open and all your intestines pulled out and flopped on your belly....then imagine it was shoved all back in and sewed up...while you were awake? Now imagine having to get up frequently to care for a newborn while having pain to where your stomach was cut open days before. You don't think you would maybe want someone else to give you a hand so you could rest?

I can take up to 12 weeks at my work. Between my short term disability and my extended leave bank (which has 370 hours in it so far) I should have no problem taking all 12 weeks.
