Because in our culture, this is seen as discrimination, but my question is why?
Because it's sexist. Men are usually ok to go back to work a week after the kid is born. Not so for women. It gives men a great advantage over women in getting a job, almost regardless of the qualifications.

I understand as I was there once and I quit to go to a much smaller, more relaxed firm
I wouldn't say I "burned out" though, it was a calculated decision as even though my current salary is higher than it was at the old firm, my overall earning potential is lower in the long term, but its worth it IMO
That's your choice. I mean, I work in the beltway. It's a competitive lucrative market. Some folks don't have that luxury.

This is already covered by FMLA.
If we can at least establish that this is justified then we can see where that takes us in regards to paid leave or leave in general. Either way there is at least a defense for the FMLA which is itself a mandate against the free markets in everything people.

I don't conflate ethics and mandates.
The thing is that we as society determine what mandates we think that the government should make based off of our own ethics which is based in some way on our societal values.
Really I have pretty ambivalent feelings about this subject. I'm just trying to see about an intelligent way to frame the conversation.
For example:
quote:
I do not think this is a basic human right. People choose to have children or not have children. It is not the government's responsibility to mandate how companies respond to this choice.
A fair enough position, and I don't think that I disagree with it.
However, there are further questions that arise. Is this something that society wants to protect? Does trying to protect it cost more than it benefits? What are the possible methods of funding? Does the definition of basic rights change as the prosperity of a society change?
Who is really valued in society? Etc.
Either way it's a better discussion than just simply saying that the free market fixes everything idea put forth by the amateur economists who can't get past an academic economic model that does a good job of explaining mechanics but doesn't actually give a good idea of what really happens in the real world.

Because apparently minorities, pregnant women, women and every other disabled person wouldn't get a job without government interference.
Dude you are the definition of a ranter.

ITT: "employers" who give minimum benefits are mad about minimum effort in return.
You get what you pay for a-hole.

Hilary will fix it once she gets into office.

Generally for, but it depends on the details. A relatively new employee shouldn't expect 6 or 12 weeks, for example.

These are all good questions and they are not easily answered. Although they should certainly be debated by those smarter than I.

I wish we would reduce other entitlement programs and push money into that.

If woman wants to have baby then she should stay home, have baby, and then raise baby. I'm for mandatory 18 years of nonpaid time off. Or at the very least 5 years.
Men take off a week of vacation time.

Paternity leave for a healthy baby? Might as well go gay porn while you're at it.
