For young professionals, especially those talented ones considering their career options while starting a family, 13 weeks (three months) paid maternity leave and 2-3 weeks paid paternity leave are great attractions. And the business itself creates a culture of treating its employees like humans by investing in their lives and families.

it seems obvious

I'm sure the government would love to hear this from you. You do know that is completely illegal, right?
so are shredding your emails, killing political enemies, and setting up a sham charity.

A man is going to file a lawsuit against DupontsCircle for pregnancy discrimination against a woman that doesn't exist and never interviewed.

Let me start setting money aside for this judgement today.

I dont disagree there.

But having one or two kids a couple years apart like most people do is the norm.

Certainly is. There are just some jobs that you absolutely cannot have someone absent for months at a time. Making it govt mandated would be extremely hurtful to a lot of businesses.

Regardless of the time, all of the co-workers are the ones having to take on extra responsibilities.

Too many businesses now a days have no loyalty or care for their employees. Which in turns makes the newer employees have no loyalty or care for the company. It's creating an interesting change in business climate.

but I do encourage businesses to invest in the lives and the families of their employees by offering generous and competitive maternity and paternity leave.

however, families don't return the favor. everyone is always on linked-in looking to find a better opportunity. gone are the days of a majority of employees building a career with a company, now? the mentality is "we are all unrestricted free agents". why should a company invest in it employees when the employees will cut bait and run for 5% more salary elsewhere?

I'm saying my argument is based in real world facts.

The real world is where you get sued into an oblivion for doing this. If you worked for a larger company and HR got whiff of you saying this, then you'd be fired on the spot, no matter what your fellow employees had to say about you and what you've done for the company. I'm guessing you don't have a college education, especially in business, since you would know this is a great way to run your company into the ground.

And I'm sorry you can't afford to let your wife stay home and you need those extra few dollars. But DupontCircle ain't having it.

Thank God I don't have a shitty stupid boss like you. One of my fellow employees is on a 3 month paid maternity leave, and my boss is taking over her territory like a champ and not bitching at all about it.

God forbid a woman who pays her damn taxes and is happily married brings life into the world and fulfills her dreams of a family. Stop being so fricking selfish and let her have a kid and give her the financial support to do it so long as she's been a good employee to you. It should go both ways. Yeah, your employees may have to work a tad bit harder to take up the slack, but happy and good employees help each other out when it's something as big as that.

So I gotta work harder and more for the same pay because Suzie wants kids? Whats my incentive?

it just seems that if you have a healthy work atmosphere, this shouldn't be a problem

everyone should realize that they may be in the same situation at some point and need their coworkers for help, it shouldn't be deemed such an inconvenience

bullshite

many people see the benefits of a good employer over a 5% raise

loyal employer breeds loyal employees

If a company clearly cared about their employees, treated them like family and rewarded them for good work, employees would stay.

If my company treated me like a replaceable asset, I wouldn't hesitate to look for better options

I work with a lot of women and see them constantly come in late, leave for doctors appointments, complain about salary, etc. Im over showing empathy.

BTW my wife will be a vet and work for herself. We wont have the luxury of maternity leave so no, we wont ever be in a situation where co-workers can "return the favor".

If you have this problem, you probably aren't recruiting the talent you need, and consequently don't offer competitive packages for your employees.

Having above average pay, benefits, and a good work culture go a long way toward making loyal employees, and ultimately a healthy bottom line.

Do you think theres a correlation between the most successful businesses and their top talent?

Clearly, because McDonalds would have canned your arse by now for refusing to hire someone just on the fact that she is pregnant.

Do you know Suzie? Does she help you in the office? Would she help you out in a bind? What about her family- have you met them? Most times when you cover for someone they are likely to help you in return down the road.

However because you're asking the question I get the impression you're the only one that you're looking out for, so it's not terribly surprising that you need to ask this.
