ARNO Animal Rescue New Orleans. It’s a no kill shelter that takes dogs from the SPCA overflow. I picked up a hound dog puppy that was already potty trained and only got into things minor times. She’s now 5 and 65 pounds and pretty much a couch potato.

Two bedroom apartment within 30 yards of a dog park and 5-6 acres of walking paths in a southern city. Looking for a small/medium ish sized dog with medium energy. Preferably short hair. Not all set on a specific breed. Keeping options open. Don’t want to get a puppy mill dog and I don’t see many rescue animals that fit.

Even with that park and trails, are you really prepared to exercise it regularly? To walk it outside several times a day to use the bathroom (even during rain, sleet, and snow?). If not, you need a couch potato. You also need a non-barker in that apartment (so long beagle!). And that short hair is going to shed and will be a permanent fixture to your clothes and furniture. Are you prepared to make accommodations when you want to take a trip? Be realistic. Dogs are awesome, but they will change your lifestyle. You need to be ok with that.

That said, I went against all of the advice from above while in a similar situation as you and got a basset hound (breeder) and a border collie mix (shelter). They are often more than a handful, but we love them to death.

I grew up on a cattle farm. We had collies because they are great at herding animals. We found a good breeder by asking our vet. They were wonderful dogs.

You’ll never catch it chasing it around with a boner and a jar of peanut butter. That dog doesn’t know you.

I have lived with dogs before. And dog sat. And I’m somewhat ok with a potentially lazy dog

I have 2. One was an accident when 2 of our deer beagles “hooked up” between a chain link fence. The other is a retired hunting dog that got to the point he’d rather just hang out with people than chase deer.

Found my dog on the side of the road on Wallace side of Veterans bridge. She was emaciated. Half dead. Ran right up to me. 5 years ago last week. Great arse dog.

So I had written a long story but decided that you probably wouldn't read it...

So go to the pound and get a pitbull/husky mix...you will enjoy it.

We had two puppies show up at our house one evening. My 15 yr old got attached to them. I agreed to keep one of them. A nearby neighbor took one and the one we kept is an absolute perfect watchdog/companion. He gets treated like royalty and alerts us anytime a stranger approaches. Great dog and companion.

When he was a puppy, my dog just showed up at my house one day. Thirteen years later he is still mooching off me.

He’s the best dog ever really. A loyal pal. A mutt but mostly lab.
