You have nothing more than a child's understanding of these principles.

we all own more YKK than anything else?

I stayed up all night counting. I own al least 32 more Yeti coolers than ykk items. I didn't count my soft-sided coolers since the zippers might offset, but I own hundreds of those for personal/weekend use.

You want bacteria in your intestines, not your stomach.

Assuming you are married, go look in your wife's closet and do a count of how many zippers.

I am willing to bet you have a lot more zippers than the above products combined.

Slim margins and high barriers to entry (equipment and labor costs). It's really hard for a competitor to get off the ground without a ton of volume.

Any of the big commodity chemicals companies would probably qualify, like BASF to name one. They make plastics of all kinds, foams (for seat cushions and running shoes), etc. And yes, the polyester and/or rayon that goes into clothing. The teflon on your nonstick pans. The latex on your condoms. Petrochemical products are *far* more widely used than just zippers (they probably make the plastic in plastic zippers too).

So after all these years with billions and billions of zippers sold, not a single company looked at that market and said 'We want a piece of that' and made any kind of real inroad?

There are quite a few large zipper manufacturers. SBS is a major competitor of YKK, FWIW, IIRC.

I own more guns by one company than I do YKK. Not to mention ammunition. Knives. All sorts of gear bought in bulk. It really isn't close.

Can you imagine if someone started a rumor about what YKK means or what their logo symbolism suggests. Kind of like during the 80's when Proctor and Gamble was in trouble because a few wing nuts said their logo was really Satanic messaging.

People would flip out because all their clothing has it. "Oh no, it's the beast number on me!'

Yeah and Q-Tips was a great answer.

Toothpicks would also be a good one. Or paper towels. You can go on.

But you chose to buy that brand of q-tip, or ammo, or whatever.

You aren't buying clothes based on the zipper manufacturer.

More numerous than all the cells that make up our bodies?

That's not true

Light bulbs?
Q-Tips?
Cotton Balls?
M&M's?
Anything else sold in packs of 1000

I understand, but chances are that the zipper you have is NOT made by YKK. They don't make up half of the zipper market, even though they're the largest manufacturer.
