re: How come dogs have legal protections but pigs don't?

Dogs evolved, pigs haven't. Dogs are useful, have those lovable faces and eyes, that didn't happen by accident; wolves don't do it.
I've unwittingly eaten dog in Korea, and wasn't pleased when I found out. Pigs, for all their perceived intelligence, act just like cows at the abattoir. Dogs don't have that problem at shelters, vets when "it's time."

They'd taste good marinated for a few hours and grilled.

Once you turn anything into pepperoni, it all tastes the same.

It is partially a cultural thing. Some countries/people do eat dogs and some don't eat pigs, etc. I don't give a shite one way or the other. We eat pigs here and dogs are our pets, as long as they are friendly. Most of us would shoot a bad dog without second thought. We still wouldn't eat it though.
The other difference is that dogs are more domesticated. If you drop dead next to your dog, it's not likely to eat you until it's starving. Drop dead next to a pig and see how long it takes before you become food.

I'm not sure, but the pig gives you bacon when you've been extra special good. Bacon is it's own food group.

aside from the fact that pigs are delicious
that's a rather important part of the equation.

The pig union is weak.
Like the henp union.
Now we have to wonder if you meant “hen” or “hemp.”

Supposed to be hemp, but hen works too.

Animals serve their purposes. Dogs act as hunting companions and security guards. A cat kills mice and other small creatures. A pig has bacon.
