Never had one before, going in for my first tomorrow. Is it just solid pain during and for the next week or so afterwards?

Update: wow not nearly the torturous process I thought I was in for. Was sent by my regular dentist to an endodontist and apparently that makes a huge difference as this is all this guy does. In and out in 30 minutes. The numbing shots were the worst part and really very little residual soreness. Not planning on having any more of these by any means, but wont be shitting my pants like I was yesterday if i ever have one in the future.

You’re going to feel a world better when it’s done. The shot to deaden it is the worst part...except for when they drill through the root. That feels awesome.

Worse than it would've been to just brush and floss your teeth.

I was so drugged up for mine, it was nothing. It does feel weird though, and if they're draining an abscess, that's gonna stink.

I had one about a year ago. They’ve made a lot of advances - nothing to it.

I had a double root canal and actually fell asleep in the chair. I had closed my eyes from before he numbed me up because I didn't want to see the needle or any of the instruments, and once I was numbed it was such a non event that I decided to take a snooze

On the other hand, my girlfriend is a high metabolizer of the local anasthetic, and they never believe her until she tells them she can still feel what they're doing after a bunch of shots. Then she gets the gas.

What's your pain threshold? In this case, 1 being a rusty nail through your foot and a 10 being sawing off a limb with no anasthesia and nipple clamps on your nads?

No big deal. Sore for a day or two the probably better than the tooth ache.

The guy who did mine prescribed some ibuprofen, steroids and some other stuff (no opioids) for the aftermath that had me feeling great for about a week. I hated to see those scrips run out.

My dentist has a huge illustration of a root canal procedure on the wall of one of his rooms. It is one of the most horrifying things I have ever looked at.

I am going to go brush my teeth right now.

I had gas for mine, didn't feel a thing.

But I have heard horror stories, so be prepared.

They’re not bad anymore. Just hope you don’t get dry socket after.

Unless you don't follow the aftercare instructions they're pretty easy to deal with.

No, not necessarily. It all depends on how badly the existing tooth is infected. If there's an ongoing infection while they're doing the procedure, the chance for pain is greater.

I did a couple weeks of antibiotics prior to mine. Mine didn't really hurt while the work was being done, but being in that dentist chair for 2 or more hours is what got uncomfortable for me. There was no real extended soreness after other than the shot/numbing locations.

Hell, I know you can get ibuprofen anywhere. It was the steroids and other stuff that you can’t get over the counter.
