Below is a chart detailing cases per 100K people/percentage of the population affected. I found this to be eye opening. Graph includes American cities, parishes/counties, states, and other countries.

Where do we stand? Out of all cities, parishes, states, or countries, Louisiana is 14th on the list. Orleans Parish is 2, Jefferson parish is 8, and East Baton Rouge parish is 19.

Well for those who accurately and forthrightly report statistics, it looks bad in Orleans Parish. Don't pay a lot of attention to statistics from countries that lie, cheat and suppress their population to stay in power. But if you choose not to, it looks like people in parts of the US contract at higher rates than the world. Damn!

From what I understand Shreveport will be joining that list soon. They're just a few days behind NOLA with a similar growth pattern.

There’s no way that’s accurate. Lots of people either haven’t been tested, are asymptomatic, or think they already had it and recovered from it without ever getting tested.
I’m more interested in the number of deaths and people on ventilators.

There is no way India is testing let alone reporting anything close to being reality.

Spot on.

In EBR they are short on tests so they are only testing the sick people, not a random sample. Tell me what that does to the percentage of positives per 100 tested?

The media keep hyping exponential increase in cases. But its just the increase in found cases, there may be millions more that won't be found.

Dr. Brix was already backpedaling on the news that early projections were way off on number that will need ICU care.

I'm not saying this virus is a nothing burger, but it isn't the apocalypse its been reported. It's plausible more will have died from H1N1 than this virus.

Agreed. But then it would be zero for underdeveloped countries because they don’t have vents. The lack of widespread testing makes things difficult. I have to get permission from my ER director to test patients suspected of Covid.

Exactly. Stats about deaths, cases, hospitalizations, etc. are meaningless without data on testing.

I can't believe my country sucks so hard at math.

You have to figure in testing per capita for those numbers to matter
Louisiana leads the south in testing numbers

Absolutely. That’s why South Korea’s numbers looked so bad early on, because of mass testing. I don’t think we will get good estimates of actual mortality until this thing is all said and done. But in terms of hospitalized patients the mortality is still pretty high.

The mortality rates compared to the overall population (not confirmed cases) in NOLA are the highest in the country by a wide margin

Uh 15 and 20. How did you get that wrong?

Also, why didn’t they break this down by county/district/province and city for Italy and Spain? Aren’t those the two places being overrun?

NOLA probably has the highest percentage of unhealthy people too so that certainly doesn't help the issue.

I’ll let you look closely at the chart and try again.

As for a better metric, deaths per capita would probably be the best overall metric for judging regional severity. So let’s look at that:
quote:

Orleans Parish, which shares its borders with the city of New Orleans, has suffered the highest number of deaths per capita of any county in the nation.

So if we take new orleans out of the equation we have 579 cases in the remainder of Louisiana.

Certainly doesn't

But the #2 area has half the mortality rate. NOLA is way out in front

That tells me their density of infection is probably pretty high as well

Exactly. The main thing I have learned from this is so many people I otherwise respect are fricking terrible at statistics.
