Sorry to be your Debbie Downer, but it's really not worth it, IMO. Crowded, slow, average displays, and not a single animal to be found anywhere. And I've tried it in two separate years. Moody Gardens is a much better option for lights, but I understand that's much farther for most people. Even a drive through River Oaks might be just as impressive.

If you are going to go, make sure you have something else planned with it. Dinner, museum, something...

There's also Christmas Village at Bayou Bend on Memorial Drive. Not too terribly far from the zoo. I have not been but it seems like it could be better than the zoo. Check out their site.

Do: Not go. It’s nothing but 25,000 screaming and misbehaving kids and you don’t see many animals because they’re not out at night.

Don’t: Go. See above.

There are 3 in the greater Houston area. Plus 3 loops of I-10.

Coincidence?

If I could make a suggestion, the children's museum is not even 10 minutes away. It's open until 8, and the lights are open 6:00-9:30.

Take them early to have a burger at Barnaby's, bring them to the children's museum for a while, then head to the zoo afterwards. All 3 are close to one another, but zoo lights parking can be ridiculous at times. They would have a good time. The museum is fun.

We went last year. Won't go back. Way too crowed and once you go in, you can't get out until you finish the whole thing.

PHX Zoo does zoolights as well(I would imagine most zoos in cities do this now to make money).

I went this year only because a friend had free passes for it. Company she works for bought out the zoo for 2 nights before it opened to the public so only employees and family could go to zoolights. It was nice...but can only imagine how packed it would be when opened to the general public(where they charged you $18 a person to basically walk around the zoo at night at look at lights).

Another time I went years ago I can remember having to park in another lot and be shuttled up to the zoo. Then wait in a long line in the cold to get in. Then walk around in a very crowded zoo.

Go early, cause parking is a clusterfrick. Sneak in the side entrance with all the private party people. If you have tickets, they will let you in, and shorter line.

Do: Go on member nights (first two nights it’s open)
Don’t: Go on a regular night. Way too many people and it’s not worth it.

I always thought it was fun, but we haven't lived there in 6 years.

Go to Santa's Wonderland in Aggyville.
