I will enjoy the 90 min weekend trip to H-Town. Maybe then we can stop hating on one another
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

If it was the same cost as flying and I used that route weekly I would always take the train even if it would take 30 minutes longer. Especially if its a single route train that can turnaround without delays
O I would too. And there will be delays. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves with that.
But I'm just saying that the numbers they're banking on are inherently limited by the price and the target clientele. No one will pay $250 a day to go back and forth from Dallas to Houston. That's $62,500 per year. So the 50,000 daily commuters they're banking on just won't do it. It's economically infeasible. But let's say they get weekend riders who travel to Dallas or Houston and stay the week before going back home. And let's say they occasionally get a daily commuter. And obviously anyone who just wants to take a trip up to Dallas or down to Houston. How many people are we talking in a year? Honestly? Let's say that 2 million residents of the DFW and Houston areas ride the train at some point in the year. And let's say maybe half of those ride it two times. And let's say maybe 50,000 ride it on a weekly basis. You're looking at something like $2B in revenue? Maybe? At the high end? Less expenses, debt, etc. How much revenue do you need to break even? I have to believe it's high. And the debt service alone will be high. Remember this is all privately funded, so they aren't getting government interest rates.
All I'm saying is that it sounds like a good idea in theory, but it seems terribly limited. If it had more stops or was a true high speed commuter train on which people could spend like $15 to get from the Woodlands to downtown? My God it would be packed. But I'm having a hard time fathoming them making money.

Excellent post. That 1.2 Trillion we borrowed for the war on terror (close to 5 trillion when we included interest) could have went a long way on improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Exactly. We have a simple doctrine on terror. You attack us and we blow you up and the country you are in. We do not waste time country building.
There are 7.2 non-Americans in the world, they can police the planet. In the mean time we are going to advance civilization.
We adopt the plan and people are going to be working and making money. There would not be time for all this faux outrage.

No way Southwest, United, and American let this happen.

If this need was truly there, why is someone like AMTRAC not running the route? I know AMTRAC is terrible, but I would think that someone could use existing railroad track and a train that goes something like 80-100 mph, just build a station or two, and be all in for something like $500 mil? If the commute was 2.5 hours, and it was affordable it would be a much more logical way to explore the market.
I just don't see the ROI there for something with so much speculation, and such a high cost.

A Dallas to Austin high speed train would be more useful.

I should have said Dallas to San Antonio with a stop in Austin.
The why was I'd rather go to Austin and San Antonio than Houston.

So we should build this for your use , not for profit or public benefit ?

Ever take I-10 through San Antonio?
It goes to one lane. Both directions.

Had the pleasure of taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and then onto Okayama about 4 years ago, and it was fantastic. They hit their schedules within minutes, they can get up to 300+ mph in open countryside, and the ride is incredibly smooth. Cars are clean, snack service is convenient. Just a great alternative all things considered. I hope they use this model as a basis for Dallas to Houston, and that it serves as a model for future expansion to other parts of the country.

Yet it's shockingly easy to get through San Antonio and a Goddamn nightmare to get through Baton Rouge.

The shinkansen is the model they are using for the train, but this is America so shite like being on schedule and having clean quarters is unlikely.

No I haven't been to San Antonio but you peaked my interest and from the looks of it the only place I see one lane is at the Junction for 35. This is of course after you've already passed the 410 Loop...BR would know about loops right?

We know a lot. I get jealous every time I drive through Lake Chuck.
Just pointing out the irony though in your statement because I-10 does indeed go to one lane in TX.
Which is technically one more time than it does in Baton Rouge. I'm fully aware that the 10/110 interchange is hot garbage, but 10E goes from three lanes across the bridge, to two lanes after the 110N lane exits, up to four lanes once the 110S lanes join 10E, then down to three after they lose one to the Washington St. exit. Never just one lane.
ETA: And it's 'piqued' your interest.
