I wouldn't classify $160k as rich, but a family earning $160k per year can live very nicely in 95% of the country.

Did they keep the tax credit on like 10,000 dollars of unemployment benefits? Because if so, that’s pathetic.

Exactly...those paying the most for it, get nothing.

There are very few people getting above the line, $40k deductions. Itemized and Standard deduction reduce AGI to taxable income.

You're right, I was thinking of taxable income. That said, my AGI is usually significantly lower than my gross income.

So, if you don't qualify for a check do you get a tax credit or anything?

The bigger child tax credit will be another stimulus in next year's taxes. Damn, that was a hell of an increase.

did I read it right that we should be getting checks starting in July for the new child tax credit? or is that something that still needs to be worked out?

I have no idea. I figured it was just a change to the credit and you do it on your taxes?

Are they going to pay it out monthly instead? If so, holy crap.

Aside from those changes, the CTC would be partially paid out on a monthly basis, rather than claimed once per year when people file their tax returns. In other words, a family with two children under 6 would qualify for $7,200 in CTC payments, or $600 in monthly payments.

But there's a hitch: The monthly payments would run only from July through December of this year, with the other half of the CTC paid when people file their tax returns. In other words, households would receive six months of monthly income, and then would receive the rest of the CTC through their tax refund.

Wow. So, people with kids are essentially getting a form of UBI?

Yeah half over 6 months and half on next year's taxes.

$3,600 for the kid under 6 ($300/month Jul-Dec)
$3,000 for the kid 6+ ($250/month Jul-Dec)

The American Rescue Plan would temporarily expand the child tax credit for 2021. First, the plan would allow 17-year-old children to qualify. Second, it would increase the credit to $3,000 per child ($3,600 per child under age 6) for many families. Third, it would remove the $2,500 earnings floor. Fourth, it would make the credit fully refundable. And fifth, it would allow half of the credit to be paid in advance by having the IRS send periodic payments to families from July 2021 to December 2021.

All that follows the same income cutoff thresholds as the stimulus. Families earning over 150k would stay at the 2k/child.
