If they're worried about spying on the American citizen that much, they'd expand the ban and include Facebook, Insta, etc. They don't like TikTok because they can't control it.

I hate government overreach…

But this isn’t government overreach. This is necessary. I strongly support.

Anyone with half a brain can see the only reason they want to ban it is because it is full of videos about things they don’t want us to see. They hide behind China bad but really they just don’t want you to see the stuff on it.

Spying aside, the cultural cancer that is TikTok won’t go away with banning it.
We just need the same algorithm that CCP is requiring. Our population is getting dumber and they are getting smarter

I think at some point, you have to do uncomfortable things to save your future. Banning a Chinese app that is doing measurable harm to our country is an acceptable use of govt power to me

I downloaded the app once. Knowing my age and gender, the first videos it decides to show me are of underage girls. Its designed for degeneracy

You couldn’t be further from the truth.

China doesn’t allow TikTok.

Nothing is pushed to you other than what you want. You watch a lot of college football videos, you are going to get a lot of football related videos. You watch a lot of makeup tutorials? You’re going to get a lot of make up related videos.

I’ve been on it for 2 plus years. I may have seen 2-3 pro China videos and it was some dumbass college kids. I’ve seen hundreds of anti-commie videos in that time (thankfully).

Facebook is the one in bed with China. Every damn day they have Chinese propaganda on there from tourism videos to weird hype about their infrastructure and they try to make everyday life seem like a utopia.

I get that some of y’all want to believe ignorant politicians who know nothing about TikTok but it’s not just nurses dancing and it’s absolutely not Chinese propaganda.

I feel banning anything is very China which is ironic in this case.

TikTok can DIAF but this is flirting w/1st Amendment infringement.

Parents need to parent and not have their kids have a social media account until they are 18.

TikTok is the ultimate propaganda, brainwashing and psy-op and the US has bought into it hook line and sinker

Well said. I hate China, but this is not the way. As some other people are saying, this is probably more about eliminating them as a competitor to other big tech operations than some type of security interest.

I don’t like the precedent of the government being able to ban businesses unless they can prove they’re breaking the law

Update

quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House on Wednesday passed a bill that would lead to a nationwide ban of the popular video app TikTok if its China-based owner doesn’t sell, as lawmakers acted on concerns that the company’s current ownership structure is a national security threat.

The bill, passed by a vote of 352-65, now goes to the Senate, where its prospects are unclear.

TikTok, which has more than 150 million American users, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd.

The lawmakers contend that ByteDance is beholden to the Chinese government, which could demand access to the data of TikTok’s consumers in the U.S. any time it wants. The worry stems from a set of Chinese national security laws that compel organizations to assist with intelligence gathering.
