house is getting torn down. while it's a shame, the buyer can do anything he wants.

I live right down the street from it. It is a very cool house and lot. It has been occupied by the Beverly Hillbillies for the past 10 years and they have really let it go. I wish I had bought it from the first owners in this story. Just not a good deal.
The latest owners are subdividing into 4 lots--that's 300K/lot. Ridiculous.

The pictures on Zillow make me think they never wanted to sell it. There's close ups of lamps and a few blurry pictures of the house with snow on it

was that house designed by Mike Brady?

Well, could be some fraud in the inception.

I just don't see how that house fits into the realm of a historic landmark.
It's unique. It's different. But it's not like it has cultural or historical significance. It's a residential home where ordinary people lived.
It's not the childhood home of a president. Wasn't the birthplace of a huge invention.
It's just a weird house that the owners sold and have no say in anymore

Looks like an ugly-arse house to me.

Every time I pass that house, I think "Brady Bunch home". Don't know why, because the house from the tv series doesn't really look all that similar.
By the way, I don't think the house is very good looking.

The guy went in and lied to an old couple. Probably nothing much can be done regarding the sale but they can certainly shame him
Im not sure thats necessarily true.
There might be some OT lawyers here that can shine some light on how this does or doesnt apply in practice but I know that, in LA, oral contracts are legally binding. Problem is proving.
If the buyer came hat in hand and promised, verbally, to renovate the property and the sellers agreed to sell based on that information, maybe they have a case. The written contract was then not carried out in good faith.

Not only that but they are hard to maintain. The flat or low-slop roofs are very prone to leaking. Exposed windows with no overhang isn't a good idea either.
Those houses were built with looks in mind and not performance.
Spending my entire life involved in residential construction in the deep south Ive learned that there was a wisdom from our forebearers that was gleaned from generations of real world practice of what works and what doesnt.
Every house in this part of the country should be and at one time was, built like this for good reason -
And for OG OTBallers -

Preservationists bring news crew onto property they do not own to shoot commercial to try to prevent property owners from doing what they want with their property.

The olds love property values going up, but don’t want to pay the higher property taxes associated with higher values.
If the assessor revalued property - up and down - according to actual values, it would not only help the tax base, but free up property that has been sitting for decades.

This story is bullshite. the house is in deplorable conditions and the previous owners still owed $500,000 on it and were in no way trying to save it.
The people that are getting upset about this in BR are full of it and dont even know the entire story.

That would be a shame to see that gone. Guaranteed neither the material quality nor craftsmanship of the McMansions that go up in its place will hold a candle to that house. Sad to see it go.

Sad thing is that many older people are getting duped this way. The property tax debate here in TX has brought up the gentrification of areas with lots of older Dallasites that are dealing with higher property taxes in their smaller homes they've been in for 50yrs. All being forced on them due to houses going through this. They dont care about the value as much as others, but dont want to leave what theyve known for most their lives. Especially older widows.
it's an interesting dilemma that the people effected dont have a voice strong enough against the developers eying their 1/2 acre lot that is worth over $500k w/o the house on it.
This is why its smart to move far enough away from the big city and its sprawl that it cant reach you in your lifetime.

That said I’m not a fan of them dropping 4 houses on the lot.
Why do you care what someone else does with land they own?

So whats your connection to this property?

They didn’t sell it to a developer, they sold it to a couple, thinking they were going to move in, fix it, but the buyers sold it within an hour to the developer. They basically were the developers, acting as a couple.
This is not true.
