Home Warranty Services

My cousin has been paying a home warranty company to cover stove, refrigerator, AC Units, etc
He’s been paying $95.00/month for almost the past 3 years
He’s never had to use their service
His AC Unit went dead - 80 something degree in his house, bla bla bla
So he called three companies and submitted all three estimates he received to the home warranty
The scam artist home warranty company will NOT cover this AC Unit
The cheapest quote he received was around $8,000 and change
How in the word do they get away with this when they advertise that they cover all appliances including HVAC and AC Units?
Insurance is great until you need it I guess

That's expensive. We have used American Home Shield for several years. It is <$500 per year.

Most basic home warranties don't cover AC. Most basic home warranties aren't $1200/year either

I think that is who he is using! American something.
He said the company has different plans and because of the AC thing he opted for I guess their all in plan

I've never heard good things about home warranty services.
I suppose there are some good stories, but it seems like I hear what the OP is stating way more often than not.

Most home warranty company's make you use their HVAC guy in the area.

One of them was the one they use in the area

Someone I know was paying home warranty service and he was telling me one day, his AC unit went out so he calls them up. Whoever he used didn't allow the customer to pick who they wanted to use, they sent out their own people.
He said it was two young guys. He knew the problem and had to tell them the problem. He was just wanting to get the service he paid for. I forgot what he said was wrong with it, but they told him that he needed a few other things, that he was pretty sure he didn't need. And of course, the warranty only covered so much so he would have had to come out of pocket.
He said he learned the hard way that the home warranty services are nothing but a scam. He told them to not worry about it, called the company and cancelled. They told him he had to pay some crazy amount (a few hundred) to close his account. He said he told the woman he wasn't paying it and said some bullshite about "his lawyer" and they "removed the charges". So, that's the only story I have to share that pretty much confirms what you say about them.

I had one for a year included when I bought my condo. Used it twice and they sent a great, competent plumber. That said I still had to pay 75 bucks a call and it wouldn’t have been much more if I called the plumber directly.

Correct, they've already contracted out to local subs.
Never heard of anyone doing the 3 quote deal and then submitting it to a warranty provider.

I don’t think he knew about using their people. He just happened to call them for an estimate and it was actually their people without him knowing

Use them also and after I signed up heard nothing but horror stories about em from friends but ended up being
one of the best investments I've ever made.Replace 2 HVAC units,a stove and a built in microwave over the last 4 years...contractors were excellent.

Tell him to read his contract. A warranty service refused to cover my mom's AC unit so I read her contract, highlighted the relevant sections that clearly stated it was covered and sent it in. I requested a letter stating why it wasn't covered and let them know if it wasn't received in 7-10 days that we would be filing a lawsuit.
Two days later they agreed to cover it.

We also have AHS, first year free but we re-upped for our second year. They have replaced the control board on HVAC unit, replaced plumbing behind our sink & dishwasher, and one other project that I can’t remember. I imagine there are many who pay for it and don’t see value, but it has been a good deal for us.

While what you have posted may be technically true, I will guarantee that there are a whole lot of pieces to that story that are missing. I have had home warranties as a part of a home purchase and can tell you that a lot of what you posted is just not the way they work.

I had American Home Shield for awhile when I was living in a house with older appliances. I was paying $35 a month and it covered all of the kitchen appliances, washer and dryer, and most AC issues. I stopped using them about a year ago.
I think I had to call them out at least once a year for five years straight to handle one issue or another; mostly with the old AC unit that we had.
It was frustrating as hell. It would take between one and two weeks to fix the problem with several visits. They used the dregs of the HVAC industry. You wanted to bang your head on the wall. But, at the end of the day, it would eventually be fixed, and something that would have cost me hundreds or even thousands of dollars would cost me $75. So it's a trade off.
Whatever you, I mean your cousin has sounds insane for $95 a month. You have been ripped off. I mean your cousin.

I don’t know which ones you’ve been looking at but most around $485-$500 cover ac units.
