Under a proposed law in Louisiana, homeowners would have to hire a licensed general contractor for any home improvement work valued over $10,000. Some worry the measure will destroy the market for trim carpenters, fence builders and other handymen who can perform jobs up to $75,000 under current law. Currently, the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSBLC) regulates two different types of residential construction professionals, aside from mold remediation experts: the licensed general residential contractor, which is required for jobs priced above $75,000; and the certified home improvement contractor, who can perform work between $7,500 and $75,000. Both must go through an application process and hold worker’s compensation and general liability insurance. Only a general contractor must pass a test and demonstrate some proficiency to become licensed. Jobs below $7,500, materials and labor combined, don’t require any kind of license and are largely unregulated. State law requires general liability insurance for any business doing such work regardless of the cost, but the contractors’ board only requires proof of coverage from licensed home improvement and general contractors.

Dumb, let people use whoever they want to build. Commercial is one thing but residential shouldn’t matter. People should do their own vetting and use who they want.

This is going to force the individual trades people to move to a relationship model similar to the real estate broker and agent. I understand the why, but it's going to cost the end tradesman some money...and ultimately the consumer more money..

this part sounds like a good thing.

But, of course this is just another money grab by the state. These "fees" will end up in some politician's brother's pockets.

so the cost of making a minor repair will go up exponentially?
word of mouth usually gets you a reputable contractor
too bad the bad contractors out there screw it up for the rest of them

It's hard enough to find a competent contractor to do any job and finish it. This seems like something else to cost the consumer more money since all fees will be passed down as they charge higher prices.

There's a Republican supermajority in both houses of the LA legislature.

Most of our Republicans are just big government social conservatives.

I’ll bet if you looked at their voting records, they wouldn’t seem very “republican”. Or maybe they would given the modern tendencies of the R party.

My thoughts exactly.

Job 1: Remove existing countertops. Invoice.
Job 2: Install granite on 1 counter. Invoice.
Job 3: Install granite on counter 2. Invoice.
