I had zero issues with remodels or renovations in Florida none.

Here in LOUISIANA I’m having issues with everything I have to pull a permit to dig a shallow water irrigation well for sprinklers bc I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay to have a second water meter on my house to be charged for water 6’ deep on my property, I was told I cannot remodel my bathrooms or kitchen without a contractor. I get it I need to get a city inspector to come by and inspect my work and if I have to pay for his gas /fee or what ever so be it. But I’m not paying someone else for labor to do what I can do better and ensure it’s done right.

The list goes on and on! It took 4 months to get the gas company to come and run a new gas meter bc they said I had an old capped of farmers tap meter in the main line to the house. I fought with them for months and finally got them to cover the costs bc they are the ones that decommissioned the old meter… it was there I found it and they need to make it work but they want a new meter. I’m not paying 2500 for a new meter I’ll fix and replace anything on the old gas line myself I’m not paying an arm and a leg to get someone else to do it or put in a new line that I don’t need. I won that battle for the gas line and they did it at their expense and laid giant pex line, idk how happy I am about that. Next is the tankless water heater plumbing and then the shallow water irrigation well then get county to maintain the ditch in the yard that the culverts under the main county road that has collapsed. Get gulf shore power or what ever to come and remove a tree over their 8” high pressure gas line that goes across my prior line. If they are going to come to my house spray paint my driveway with giant yellow line to show the gas line and frick yo the ditch causing even more flooding and irrigation issues they need to come pull the tree stump from off their gas line, I called and asked them they said I couldn’t do it and it need to be contracted out and I had to pay for it??!! HA! That tree stump is coming out! I hope to do it the right way but the 2-3 tree stumps right on top of the line are about to just vanish over the weekend.. I’m not paying for any of that and if they are not going to fix the floodin it I’m going to raise the land a few inches so it doesn’t flood every time it sprinkles for 30min.

This state is a train wreck

I doubt seriously if many or any of those companies listed are interested in the home repair business and can gain from licensing small contractors.

It's not just about home improvement. It's all work over $10k IIRC. Do you think if you built pole barns as a business you would not benefit if home owners could no longer sub out or build their their own pole barn?

It will go under the table but I’m not hiring a GC to swap out cabinets.

I dont think they expect to catch people doing this kind of stuff. It will be enforced when you do work requiring permits.

One of the main issues with state licensing is it is purely a money grab by the state. There is no real benefit to the contractor to pay to secure or retain these licenses. The state mostly doesn’t police anything and crackdowns on unlicensed or underinsured contractors happens mostly because of complaints by legitimate contractors or defrauded customers. I have met very few home improvement contractors that have general liability much less workers comp. There is no benefit to the consumer and prob no benefit to general contractors either because the state doesn’t police what is currently on their plate.

This state comes up with the stupidest crap possible. The Republicans in this state are as useless as it gets. You can’t win

Just what we need. More government mandates as to whom a homeowner can and cannot hire. On a different note contractors as a group are one of the more shady occupations out there. On par with used car salesmen.

I hate this state.

If you’re doing major renovations, high risk work, or M/E/P, hire a licensed contractor with insurance. Don’t hire an unlicensed roofer. Most insurance won’t accept it for reimbursement anyways.

You don’t need that to pour a patio extension or hire a guy to come build you some cabinets.

This is all about money. Licensure fees, insurance fees, AGC dues, etc.

It's always all about the money. Louisiana politicians are very creative when it comes to transferring money from your pocket to theirs.
