In what sense is this "like drunk driving?"

Hockey is the most brutal and vicious sport I’ve witnessed. Very little sportsmanship as far as I can tell. Doesn’t surprise me this happened and I believe it was intentional. Maybe he didn’t intend to kill him but in the moment I’m sure this guy was wanting to cause an injury. He should be charged criminally.

I played hockey before and watched college and professional hockey many times. The kick was absolutely intentional. That is not a natural or even accidental motion.

I played for 13 years and one thing that was solid as a rock was legs. No reason for that spinning kick. IMO it was intentional. The outcome was not, but here we are. I think he was trying to kick him in the face with the boot.

Actions have consequences. A lot of people have driven drunk, most have luckily avoided severe consequences. The hockey player caught in a heated moment did not intend deadly consequences. Not hard to understand.

It’s a tough game, but there is a “code”, or unwritten rules that somewhat govern the fighting and rough stuff. In leagues where fighting is suppressed, however, the cheap shots and dirty tactics are way more prevalent. Many European hockey leagues have a lot more injuries caused by late hits and stick play. My credentials backing my opinion: played hockey all my teenage life, including a short stint in Junior B. Born and raised in southern Ontario.

Serious question: what does "suppressed" mean? I've noticed over the years that a lot of fighty teams sure seem to be able to not be so fighty during the playoffs.

Dude had like 71 penalties in 11 games.

Accidents are statistical certainties. If this were an accident, it would happen more.

This was an intentional act. Did he mean to kill him? Probably not, but he meant to kick him... with a blade on his foot.
Someone driving 90mph in a school zone is just trying to get to work on time, too. Nobody intends to run over a child, but we don't allow that as a defense.

Even in the NFL players don’t clear to the head. There is no way his foot accidentally got that high at the exact time of the interaction.

Intentional.

Nothing accidental about that kick to the throat.

All this gif does is make me think it's intentional.

I doubt he intended to kill the guy, but maybe it was a reaction out of frustration. Sounds like he is known as a dirty player, so that doesn't help his defense here. I think think they'll have a hard time proving actual intent though.
