quote:

We have to give it one more shot," said Board of Regents Chairman Richard Lipsey, a Baton Rouge businessman. "If we don't there are going to be some institutions that can't keep the doors open. It's not an idle threat; just a fact." But university leaders were reluctant to identify which campuses could face bankruptcy. "Some are weaker than others," said University of Louisiana System President Dan Reneau. "All are under funded. Time will tell."

i.e they don't want to trim the fat and be called racist. So instead we will keep all universities open and cut TOPS.

quote:

The House has passed about $223 million in new taxes during this special session that began June 6, far below the projected $600 million shortfall for the 2016-17 budget and not enough, Lipsey said, to keep universities as the same level they were this year.

Close Southern and Grambling -- give Southern's campus to BRCC

Scale SELU and Nicholls back down to CC

Merge Tech with ULM and NWS with LSUS

Stop all this U of Louisiana bullshite and rename it the U of Acadiana so they'll never forget their place

That's a start

Why is it always cut TOPS, cut Universities, cut hospitals? How about the other 9,000 special interest groups? Why not cut them first?

Louisiana is the most crooked state government in the country. Your issues start there.

People here have been wetting their beak since Louisiana was a colony.

After reading your treatise here, it moved.

Call me Mr. Draconian, 17% of US jobs require a college degree and we send more than twice that percentage to colleges & universities every year.

Cut, cut, close, close, repeat.

I know of a MEd (English Lit.) who cleans toilets every day.

Literally.

Small, less desirable schools are dragging the state down. They rely on the state to keep their doors open. Larger schools haven't had any problems ever. They just raise tuition to cover costs, and usually make even more money in the process. I have spoken to the president of UNO, and that's exactly what he told me. Also, go back and look at all of the bigger school's budgets. They haven't once gone down.

Don't listen to what fricking Alexander says. LSU's budget has been increasing every year. He's a POS

Something tells me we have gone over this before. Looking at the numbers, SELU does not need reduction, closure, or merger.

Every year it's the same BS in LA- "raise taxes, cut this, trim that, etc... To help budget deficits "

Then the next year " we are now in larger crisis than last year! Need to raise more tax and cut more in different areas "

Rinse and repeat.

Our tax dollars are being embezzled and not properly allocated year after year.

I've done work recently on their campus. Lot of money being spent over there, most of which is being spent through private funding/grants. Their endowment has grown a fairly big percentage in the last few years too.

They also have more students than McNeese and ULM combined. (Although, McNeese has a crazy endowment for its size because their STEM school is pretty legit and well funded)

Because Louisiana tax code and constitution need to be torn down and revamped. Legislators can't touch much. Higher ed is one of the few places they have unbridled control to cut.

Exactly...and, politicians and the big $ players won't touch special interest groups. Both parties know that if they go after the other's pet programs then the same will happen to them. Was interesting to hear Lane Grigsby touch on this at a presentation a few yrs ago while the St George movement was in full swing. He basically said if we go after theirs, they'll go after ours.
