The graduation test no longer exists in Georgia, EOCT’s only account for about 20% of their final grade, students are simply passed on and rarely fail especially if they have a “diagnosed” learning disability

Teachers and Administrations are just passing kids whether they earn it or not.

Lower standards for graduation?

Precisely this. I was listening on the radio this morning and they said that they had a higher graduation rate but had also removed 4 things as requirements to graduate in Georgia. Sorry, they either did not say what they were or I missed that part.

This. Basically, they give the kids coloring books, hope they show up, and boom-diploma.

Want to blame someone? Not the teachers, not the administrators, not even the superintendent. Look in the mirror. Elected legislators did this and have the power to fix this.

Elected officials do what the majority of voters want. If parents want their child to get a quality education they will get that education in the worst performing school district in the country. If parents simply warehouse their kid in school the kid is going to get whatever education the kid wants and in most instances kids want NONE....

Is it even an accomplishment anymore?

I just expect 99.9% of productive members of society to have finished their HS degree if they are 50 or under

In 01, Bush put into law the "No Child Left Behind Act". It changed the way schools were funded based on students' performance and grad rates. It caused schools to lower their standards, but also helped schools not give up on non-English speaking/disabled/problem kids. Plenty of good and bad came from that act.

Definitely convinced that there's some deception and accounting tricks going on and refuse to believe that high school graduation rates in America have just magically gone way up in the last 20 years.

They have. But it’s because they can’t fail anyone.

And we are worse as a society for it. School settings these days are a pitiful. We have a terrible environment for those that want to learn or even just want to act the right way. They are forced to put up with the dregs of society so that those won't be "left behind". Set every one else back in order to look after the small subset groups. This is a microcosm of our problems in society as a whole.

It's interesting to hear about the higher graduation rate, but it's crucial to know what changes were made to the graduation requirements in Georgia. If possible, try to find more details or follow up on the radio report to understand the context better. Also, considering the graduation theme, think about a thoughtful gift to celebrate the accomplishment.

Didn’t the valedictorian in a Baltimore high school have a sub-2 GPA recently?

In Atlanta or Fulton County, the head of the school system was fired. Totally incompetent. He was then hired by the Biden Administration.
I’m not kidding.

I am a teacher. The validity of a diploma does not exist today. I have kids graduating, who read on a 2nd grade level. Why? Because when they decided to base funding for schools on the letter grades they receive, schools started passing kids based on God knows what. Every child that does not graduate, the school receives a derogatory mark.
I even question the validity of a college diploma now. Its ridiculous. Pathetic!

Which school system do you work in? I’m interested in hearing more details.

This must have a tremendously negative impact of classroom behavior and the ability of teachers to really engage with the material for those students who actually want to learn.
