in LA and in many states it is the parents option quite simply... funny thing is at public schools we a footing the bill.
around 2004 their was an interesting article that 85% of the boys in one parish that were playing hs sports - were hold backs... public and private.

Blows Scruffy’s mind too.

Makes zero sense.

Because Boomers made college expensive as frick and kids need scholarships.

We talking about the same parents who drive around $45,000-$60,000 cars and bitch about how much college costs?

I hate the idea of my son going to a shitty school just to play a sport. If you can’t play at a school that you’d go to otherwise...just give it up and go to school.
That was Scruffy’s dad’s mindset.

Scruffy was never good enough to play baseball at any school, but he always stated that we were not allowed to play collegiate sports at any school except for D1 and a major conference.

It was more important of a stance to make for Scruffy’s two brothers.

Why are kids these days basing their success as a high school athlete on getting an opportunity to play college athletics?

Nobody that has any true aspirations does this.

Most athletes move on and put what they learned during their time as an athlete into their next challenge.

I was blessed enough to play another year of football in college as a walk on, but I knew that was going to end and id have to move on and a lot of my teammates even in college knew this.

As I'm sure you can understand, it's about image for these parents. Telling everyone Braxton is repeating 5th grade because his parents dream of him one day getting a scholarship comes off sounding out of touch. Telling everyone Braxton is repeating the 5th grade because he had bad teachers who don't know how to handle his ADD makes them sound like loving, caring parents.

I haven't seen him play in a few years, but he gets mixed reviews from the coaches and parents that speak of him. But ho really knows when assessing 13 yr olds.

I had a couple friends who played sports at schools like southeastern and nichols and most say they would just go to LSU (or a superior school) if they could do it over again

Sad, because we held my son, now 13, back when he was in kindergarten, they wanted us to in pre-k 4, and it still fricks with him. The kids in 8th kind of treat him like shite. He plays travel sports in his birth year, but school sports with his class. Can’t imagine holding a kid back in 5th.

It seems as if they are pushed to believing you are not successful unless you get offered a scholarship.

Just play the game and have fun. Learn life lessons. Make memories.

I think about 90 percent of HS athletes know that 12th grade is the end of the road.

I learned a life lesson. The “fun” of playing high school football comes at a price.
I didn’t play football,my family was poor as dirt and if I wanted money I had to work.
I have kept up with a lot of my old classmates and 50 years post graduation most of the ex-football players, especially the 1st string players have all had knee surgeries, knee replacements and back surgeries.Ran into old classmate the other night, he was one of our best players. He’s having hell with his neck and back, has had 4 injections trying to avoid surgery.Probably not related but most of them have had heart attacks, bypass surgery or stents also.
I’ll admit I felt kinda inferior back in high school when they were all walking around with letter jackets, but I’m glad now I didn’t play.I’m healthy,no meds and ended up better financially than most of them.

Because sports, with the exception of football, are played at the highest level on competitive clubs that cost money and their pitch is we will get you a college scholarship. They will take anyone because it’s about making $ and everyone signs up so Braxton can keep up. As such, they expect to play at the next level despite not being good enough in 90+% of the cases.

I see a bunch of soft kids that all want medals just for playing. If it weren't for Jaxxxxon and Breighlin competing every weekend in a world series for a plastic ring no one would be competitive

I see all of these "announcements" on social media by high school kids about how they are proud/happy to say they'll be continuing their (sport) career at.....And then 90% of the time it is some school name I have never heard about and when you check it, it has an enrollment of about 1800 and is located in some small town of about the same population. Photo of the athletic facilities makes most 5A high schools around here look like Tiger Stadium.

WOW! Signed a scholarship to play on a team where 85% of the players are walk-ons. I bet 80% of those kids never finish college and 98% of them don't stay at that school. Hell, you could probably get a better scholarship to that school simply by applying for an academic one.

But, yeh, Dad, go ahead and spend all that money on travel ball and private lessons from age 6 to 17....Then look back and see how you could have just saved it and PAID for college.

Depends on what the "opportunity" is.. maybe they just cant afford the tuition.... so why not take TOPS at Nicholls and also play baseball ?

I would have started my kid a year later or maybe even held him back at a young age if his school was free. He went to a n elementary school that was very difficult to get into, so we tried a year early and he got in. So now he is one of the youngest kids in his class instead of one of the older ones. He'll be a junior next year and probably 1 of only 2 starting juniors on a defending state championship football team.
