Coming out of high school I actually wanted to acquire a trade. However my parents convince me to go to college and I thank them for that everyday. The college experience is priceless, if you pick a solid major you can make good money, and I have discovered that I'm absolutely terrible at building anything.

d. How some of you don't understand that these people are so outside of the norm that it really shouldn't be considered is astounding.

No more astounding than the number of people who paid big bucks and incurred stifling debt to be un or underemployed.

High-Paying Trade Jobs Sit Empty,
there's a little problem here... You pay 50k a year for a trade, someone will find Mexicans who will do it for 35-40k

Working in a cubical doesn't make you fat. If anything it allows you to be rested for a good cardio workout sometime during the day. Also, plenty of fatasses work in the trades. Crawling under houses doesn't burn all that many calories but it does make you too tired to get an actual workout.

No heath insurance or retirement savings no doubt.

The pay in the trades is going to have to rise quite a bit more before kids turn down STEM jobs.

He’s 20 years old and getting a pension? I thought they were phasing out pensions except for teachers and cops and other government workers.

Everyone should have to pay into an IRA or 401(k) IMO

No one is saying that a kid with the mathematical/science aptitude needed to succeed in a STEM program should become a carpenter. But those kids account for maybe 5% of college students. This is about the students that dont know what they want to do, bounce between majors for a year or two and drop out with a bunch of debt and no job skills, Those that borrow 150k to get a degree in gender studies, or the high school graduate that has been living with his parents for a decade working at Starbucks instead of learning a marketable skill that they can actually earn a living with.

I meant government and municipal employees. A teacher being able to retire at age 55 is a burden to taxpayers and is an antiquated notion

Sitting is one of the worst things a person does to their body. Go talk to a dentist about neck, shoulder, and lower back pain.

I did trim carpentry over the summers during college and it absolutely burned calories. We'd sweat our asses off then hit the gym for another hour. Too tired to work out? Maybe for someone who sits on their arse all day...

There are plans for tradesmen and he's got enough in savings to buy his house over again.

Glad my fiancée has a DMD because a Ph.D. in pathology doesn't pay for shite. I make a hell of a lot more than her postdoc friends and far less stress and hours. Trade work is great for those that are self-starters and there is a ton of work needed.

Anybody that thinks trades are better than professional degrees is just dumb. We all know that going to school for gender studies is dumb, but if you think being a carpenter is better than being an engineer you're just plain stupid.

Trades need to be pushed harder because we have too many dumb and average kids pursuing college degrees. Intelligent people aren't going to be content turning a wrench everyday or fixing pipes so shite doesn't explode everywhere.

Outliers are always there, people with the capacity to become a professional (accountant, engineer, lawyer, doctor, etc.) are not the subjects of OP's article.

I think he's trying to reassure himself he didn't make a terrible mistake dropping out of college and now his body will be shot by 55 and will retire poor.
