I'm assuming more than half this board has high cholesterol. My DR called me with my yearly physical results and recommends I get on some type of high cholesterol medicine. I am 26, so I am a bit nervous about getting an everyday pill.

why are you nervous about a pill?

1/3 Americans have high cholesterol. They prescribe a statin?

I've been on cholesterol medicine since I was 22, due to family history. Never had a side effect. Most heart Dr's swear by the stuff. Don't be afraid.

Some will make your wanker not work well.
Tell him to give you Cialis to go with it.
(I'm serious BTW)

Idk, I just feel like at my age someone shouldn't be medicated for cholesterol issues. Guess you are right I shouldn't worry too much about it.

He told me to start with over the counter red wheat rice and fish oil. I will go back in 3 months and see if that helped.

Is the overall cholesterol bad or is the ratio of LDL to HDL bad?
If your HDL is too low...get on niacin...it helps tremendously. They have the non-flushing kind so you don't feel the prickly heat/flushing....I like knowing the stuff is working...it raised my HDL by 15 points between 1 year tests.

My total cholesterol was high and my LDL. My HDL was at 40 and he said that was okay. I think my total was at 272 and my LDL was at 209.

Well, you're right. Your conscious is telling you that for a reason. Pills are almost never a good thing.

I'd be more nervous about a heart attack or stroke. that's for sure.
my wife takes cholesterol meds. she's been taking them since she's about 32. I prefer that she take these rather than die on me.
note- she's skinny as shite in case these fricks start talking shite.

Bummer. That looks like Statins for you.
Do some research...statins can attack the cholesterol that makes up the myelin sheath that protects nerves.
Try to get more exercise and more fiber in your diet as well.

What else do many Americans have in common? We take in an extreme amount of salt and sugar. Eating oatmeal is not the answer (as the other poster stated) and having high cholesterol in general is not always bad. OP, eat more meat and less carbs/sugar.

My last two physicals, my total has been around 230. I have been on a Keto diet to see if that helps. Dr told me if it is not below 200 in 6 months, I go on meds. I tried a low fat diet, and it did nothing.
ETA:
The only problem with keto diet is rapid weight loss. I was already a thin guy, and now I look like I have AIDS. If this works, I am going to have to find a way to add 10 lbs.

Consume more calories than you can burn.

I had high cholesterol when I was in my late 20's and was prescribed to pravastatin. After a few years, my cholesterol dropped. I would also recommend running more, dieting and cutting back on the drinking.

Was put on Lipitor years ago. Experienced a rare side effect of major joint pain. Switched to Lovastatin and had no problems nor side effects. Walking helps drop your cholesterol and great for the heart.
