I always said, if I was an elected state representative, my first action would be to build a partnership between Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the state parks. The scouts could learn how to build and maintain the areas and the parks provide them the location.
You can do this right now as a leader in your pack or troop. My pack has built up a great relationship with Red Clay State Park and Chickamauga Battlefield which is a national park. Most of my kids are Scout Rangers already. We do the historic trails program through them too. It’s all about the effort the leader puts in to build these relationships.

The few people I know who are Eagle scouts, are good people.

My son was hyperactive at a young age. 100mph from the moment he woke up. I started taking him on walks through the neighborhood just to wear him out.
It started with cub scouts, helping the mom of one of the other kids...
It has not ended. Crossed over to the troop that has West Point/Annapolis graduates.
Long story, short, my son is an Eagle Scout, Philmont 2x, Appalachian trail, Georgia thru North Carolina, Pinhoti trail, Okeefenokee canoe trips, and order of the arrow.
The greatest thing I ever taught these boys was to learn from your mistakes. As a scoutmaster, I would let them fail, to gain knowledge.
TLDR, I understand.

Somme kids love it and pull a parent into it to get them there. Mine (#2 and #3 for a minute) wanted to try it, but for both it got to me driving them to do things, and at that point it sucks and is very annoying. Same as any other activity would be if they didn't really want to do it. I think it's all about the friends they have in it, and 2nd it's about how organized the pack is with activities. Without friends they'll lose interest anyway, with disorganization they'll end up bored.

It all depends on how serious you take it and the other parents. Cub Scouts can be a massive time suck because it’s almost your activity as much as your son’s. If you enjoy hanging out with the other dads and can turn it into a tailgate in the woods, it can be pretty fun. If it’s a bunch of weirdos you can’t talk to then it’s gonna be brutal.
Once they hit BS, the less time you spend “helping”.

My oldest son was in the Cubs and Boy Scouts and my grandson is starting to show interest. It is hard to do with baseball, but not impossible if the kid is interested and the troop has its act together. Interviewing troops is a good idea to find the best fit, but in todays environment its mostly the solid troops that have survived. Today, the adult leaders are better screened and better trained than ever. I can't think of another organization these days that unabashedly teaches the value of respect of God and Country, and the importance of leadership and respect for others to kids as central tenets.
I am an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow member. I found the experience invaluable and foundational to whatever success I've had. I probably didn't know I was a nerd, a weirdo, or a dweeb- or didn't much care that someone thought that of me because I was a Scout.
These days, I hire former Scouts when I can, especially Eagles. Most of the cool kids who peaked in high school are working in parts of our company that my subordinates deal with.

Yes khaki shirts with green shorts. 4th graders and up wear the same thing.

Any Eagle Scouts on the OT?
I am ancient so my data may be limited to the Social Security set but Eagle Scouts were some of the best of the best. Back then you were what the military looked for to recruit later in life. My Eagle Scout friends still living are solid and loyal after all these years.
I am guessing modern scouts would be allergic to the Great Outdoors and helping others and would die without electronics. I hope I am wrong.
Be Prepared! from my youth, all still good advice especially the part about the Girl Scout.

This guy was an Eagle Scout...

Well, for one, Boy Scouts is now open to girls. Girls had their own outlet via Girl Scouts, but that wasn’t good enough.

Scouting can be as big or as small as you want it to be.
The entire point is that the child only earns what the child performs. Nothing is given.
We've had some kids that only did meetings. Some kids only did campouts and adventure activities. Some kids only did competitive events (pinewood, cubmobile, space derby, athletic competitions).
And some kids did all of it.
Some kids don't need Scouting (dads take the kids hunting, fishing, hiking, camping). The local junior college can offer a workshop on welding or carpentry or American Indian lore.
My oldest did it because he had friends from grade 1-12 that all eagled together.
My youngest is nearing eagle now. He hasn't had close "friends" in Scouting for about 4 years or so. But he likes the challenges. He's very independent and enjoys solving problems (future engineer). Even though the boys in the troop are not close friends. They do get along great and have a lot of fun ripping on one another. And he enjoys annual trips snow skiing, rafting, boating, and true wilderness camping (Cumberland Island).

It wasn’t good enough and I doubt you would have supported it if it stayed just boy anyway. Girl Scouts isn’t good enough for the girls and it wasn’t good for BSA to stay boy either. You could always go to Trail Life if you want a just boy experience . Between the abuse that went on and people leaving the org, it wasn’t sustainable as it was before. By letting Cub Scouts go coed and Troop level still be single gender. You have an org that is growing again. The entire family can participate. Many established Boy Troops started a sister troops that meets on the same night so they can do things together and separate.
BSA has always been good about letting Moms and Dads take part in the Cub program. Girl Scouts does not do the same. There wasn’t a program for Dads like this where they could participate with their daughters. Now there is and it’s been great seeing this expand.
No one gives a shite about Girl Scouts anyway besides the dam cookies. Most people have zero clue what a Gold Medal Girl Scout is when it is the equivalent of Eagle. People know what Eagle is and it is respected.

Yeah. People complaining about girls don't know anything (they are looking to complain).
Girls have been a part of scouting since the 70s with the Explorers and Crew programs.
Girls have been counselors at Boy Scout camps for decades even though the girls were never allowed to Eagle.
The charter organization gets to decide if they permit girls or not.
For cub scouts, scouting has always been family friendly. My girls went on our camping outings with my boys. My girls were at the den meetings even though they weren't permitted to participate officially.
The Masons are our Boy Scout charter org. And they don't allow girls. And that's perfect (as girls would be a huge distraction for teenage boys trying to eagle).
I'm glad girls are finally permitted to eagle. It is about time. But I'm also glad that the charter organizations have the freedom to run their scouting the way that they see fit.
