The Fort Mims massacre resulted in Andrew Jackson releasing the kracken on the southeastern indians. The Creek indian that I descend from died at the Ft. Mims massacre fighting against the Red Stick faction of Creeks that attacked the fort.

As soon as I saw Fort Mims I was hoping for some cool story about your ancestors escaping the massacre.
It was a terrible arse kicking loss of life to the Native Americans that is completely forgotten and ignored because it was terrible massacre.

If it makes you feel better my ancestors, who were big frontiersman helped Jackson get the needed support from the Cherokee and associated tribes to kick the Creeks arse over all this. (And very good friends of Davey Crockett)
Of course, then he screwed over them too with the trial of tears, resulting in them marrying several of the Chiefs daughters to make up for the deception and thus much of my Indian blood.

Interesting side note:
The ramifications of the split within the creeks is still evident today. The Poarch Band is making bank building casinos. I helped excavate the Hickory Ground site in Wetumpka for the creeks to build the new casino. Hickory Ground was the last capital of the creek confederacy. The group of creeks that now lives in Hickory Ground, Oklahoma was none too happy about the excavations.......but really they just wanted a piece of that casino pie. They tried threats, intimidation, and lawsuits to stop the dig. Was a really interesting experience.

It is by no means “light reading” but if you can get your hands on the book “A Conquering Spirit - Fort Mims and the Redstick War of 1813-1814” by Professor Gregory A. Waselkov you should. Very well researched and comprehensive. First published by the University of Alabama Press in 2006.

My grandfather was in WW2 on the escort carrier USS Santee. It was a converted oil tanker or coal ship I believe. While they were in the Med supporting operations in North Africa, they ran short of supplies for a couple of weeks. They were down to sodas and ice cream is what I heard.
After a few days of that, he finds out he’s actually diabetic. He goes to Sea Island Navy Hospital to recuperate. While there he meets a nurse, my grandmother.
Another interesting note, he served on the shipped with Wellington Mara. They became friends and we have correspondence from the two of them. After the war, my GF went up to New York and hung out with him on more than one occasion. We’ve got pictures of them at a Giants game in the Polo Grounds.
