Our local hospitals stay full, especially in flu season. It's not like there are several empty rooms just waiting on Coronavirus patients.

I know someone who recently had a major surgery postponed because there were no beds for them to go to afterward. And I know of people waiting in the ER for several hours for a bed to open. That's under normal circumstances.

Let's say Coronavirus it's no worse than flu, as many keep saying. If you throw another flu on the community, one that no one is vaccinated against, it won't be long that the hospitals will be more than overrun. Add to that the problem of docs, nurses, janitors, etc. getting sick and being unable to work.

In Italy, in two weeks they went from 322 cases to 2500 to 10,000. Ventilators are limited in number. An Italian doc said they are like gold, and docs are making hard choices about who gets one. Doctor in Coronavirus-Stricken Italy Details What's Happening in His Hospital: 'Every Ventilator Becomes Like Gold'

"Those who are too old to have a high likelihood of recovery, or who have too low a number of 'life-years' left even if they should survive, will be left to die."

The Extraordinary Decisions Facing Italian Doctors: There are now simply too many patients for each one of them to receive adequate care.

Healthcare systems being overloaded is the main issue that is trying to be minimized at this point with all the travel and gatherings halted.

Not that any of this is wrong, but going forward, what is the baseline? What is the baseline for American tanking it’s economy and changing its way of life to save some people?

Because we are screeching and crashing our economy for a virus that likely in the end has a low mortality rate for anyone and everyone not very old or very sick. So I think it’s at least fair to have the testicles to discuss that without someone saying “you are a knuckle dragged!!! You hate the old!!!!! It’s just money!!!”

In 2009 when swine flu hit, it caused 300k hospitalizations in less than a year. There was no panic and our system didn’t collapse over the extra strain on hospitals.

Why did you leave out countries where the rate is slowing down?

It's slowing down in those countries because they are on lockdown. In china people can't travel, go to school, must stay at home. Can only go out to make groceries once per week. That slowed it.

Yesterday Italy went on full lock down.

The US cancelling big events and IRL school will help but people are still going to work, restaurants and bars. From what I see gyms are now empty though.

Social distancing works and is a god send for all of us introverts and those of us on the spectrum. Finally some down time making the country well by doing what we do best.

100% OP and others than agree with him must think we completely ducked up the way we handled swine flu

My wife was in her residency in 2009, and hospitals were compeltely fricked by the influx of a new novel virus

Yet, the beat went on

This is not me comparing viruses, this is me comparing public reaction to “we need hospital availability” as a campaign to shut things down

A lot of misinformation out there right now. Doesnt help that you have the stupid motherfrickers who think they know more than medical experts parroting the same stupid arse take about flu deaths.

Hey frick, what do you say to all the small business owners who are going to get raped by all this"voluntary" isolation. If the virus is not going to kill them , all of this social distancing will

But at least they will be "alive". They should thank our overlords in DC and "friends" in the media

Comparing Coronavirus to the flu is idiotic.
so tell me where did you get your medical degree from? Because I have heard many with medical degrees say it is similar to the flu.

My hope is we see a stimulus for common people and small businesses. Payroll tax helps but plenty of people won't be helped by that and small businesses won't be relieved by that
